Charity and Video Games

Right now the third True Blue Marathon is going on.  A group of friends playing through Mega Man and Sonic games to raise money for the Child’s Play Charity.  The event will go throughout the weekend.

Child’s Play is a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in their network of over 70 hospitals worldwide.

Child’s Play works in two ways. With the help of hospital staff, they set up gift wish lists full of video games, toys, books, and other fun stuff for kids.  Child’s Play also receives cash donations throughout the year. With those cash donations, they buy new consoles, peripherals, games, and more for hospitals and therapy facilities.

The marathon is set up where they will play so many hours of each series depending on how much money that gets donated.  You can choose to what percent your donation goes to either unlock Mega Man or Sonic game hours.  The max amount of time is thirty-six hours, eighteen for each series.  If they do not finish any unlocked hours they will pickup the following Saturday at Noon.

So far they have unlocked thirteen hours of Mega Man and twelve hours of Sonic.

They raised over $1,000 for their first event and $783 for their second.  They have already raised over $1,000 again, big help from the founders parents.  Let us see how much we can help them out.  Watch them play and chat with guys on their website as well.

Prizes will be given for donations.  These prizes include pear beads for various Mega Man characters and digital codes for Xbox Live and Playstation.

By they way, if you want some music to go along with this I suggest Blue Bomber by Mega Ran and Mr. Wilson.  It is a nerdcore rap album about Mega Man and Sonic teaming up.

2013 Winter Lan #1

West Virginia’s Gathering of Gamers is hosting a LAN party this week in Nitro.  The event, named 2013 Winter LAN #1, is from December 26th through the 28th.  Admission fee is $10 per person or $15 for a family of 4 or less. This is to help cover the electric bill the event will generate.  The event is at one of the members house, plenty of room there so do not worry too much about space.  They will give you the address when you sign up.

Here is the registration page.  You can come and spectator for free though.  They would like you to sign up by 6pm today so they can estimate the number of chairs and tables.

Participants will be allotted two power outlets for use with their equipment.  Headsets are suggested and a wireless access point will be provided though a wired cable is recommended. No illegal activities, cheating, exploiting, or rough housing at the LAN.  Come to the LAN with your computer fully updated and virus free. This includes drivers, video game updates, system updates, and other misc. software updates.

Game tournaments have not been finalized, but expected games include: Counter Strike, Starcraft 2, DOTA 2, Warcraft 3, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Hello Kitty Adventures.  A Trackmania 2 Stadium Tournament is scheduled.  It is expected to be about an hour-long.  The game is on Steam for $9.99 or buy a three pack for $24.99 for you and your friends. At least one FPS and RTS tournament will happen.  Open will also be going on.

A LiveStream of the event will show both the event and the games being played.

A parking map of the event is here.  Plenty of places nearby to go and get some food.

I am not really much of a gamer, but I will try to make it over myself just to hang out with fellow nerds and geeks.
