Tri-Con 2014

The Tri-State Comic Con is coming up next month on May 31st at the Big Sandy Superstore in Huntington, WV so here is an update on what will be at the con.

Announced guests since my last piece are Jeremy Barlow (Eisner nomine writer and editor, R.I.P.D, Mass Effect, Star Wars), Mat Slay (artist, Image Comics, Upper Deck),  Jamie Snell (artist, Topps, Upper Deck, Rittenhouse), and Daniel Way (creator of Draken, Wolverine: Origins, Deadpool).

Attending exhibitors that will be there are comic creators Eric Adams, Alex Heberling, Assailant Comics, Todd Beistel, Dustin Carson, Sean Forney, Todd Frazer, Tim Fuller, Rodney Fyke, Gary Gibeaut, Kevin Leen, Seth Lyons, Michael Mayne, Chris McJunkin, Shawn Murphy, Timothy Taylor, Aaron Williams, and Thomas Williams; artists Tressina Bowling, Edward Choi, Doomsday Designs, Matthew Durfee, Ronky Tonk, Marc Lewis, Ansley McDaniel, Maryanne Rose PapkeBrett Pinson; webcomic creators Derek CrostonJordan Lowe, and Support Group; authors E.S. Appearances by the WV Ghostbusters Division and rock band Harrah.

Vendors for the con include individual comic dealers and stores (C&C, Dungeon Dwellers Comics, Purple Earth Comics, Third Floor Comics), Blue Line Pro for art supplies, City of Horror, toy dealers (Classic Plastics, Dave’s All-American Toys, HillBilly Toy Chest), Gem City and Lexington Comic Con, Ryancor custom screen printers, TeeMinus 24, photographer Williamson Image, plus DZ Nuts and Cards will be looking to buy key issues and will grade two issues for free.

Panels have not been posted yet, but I am going to guess stuff about working in the industry and how to produce your own work.  Though check out the list of items they have up for the auction.

Over the Border: Ratha Con

Ratha Con is a comic book convention in Athens, Ohio at the ARTS/West: Athens Community Gateway to the Arts on Saturday April 26 from 10am – 5pm.

Artists, comic creators, and authors attending the event include Larry Blake, Jesse MarksSteve RichterTerence Hanley of Five Star Comics, Chris Monday, Derek Croston, Daniel Boyd, Ken Eppstein, Sandy Plunkett, Charles Milhouse, and Terry Eisele. For vendors you can expect people selling greeting cards, sewn items, costume items, comics, graphic novels, games, and food vendors. There will also be the award-winning lightsaber choreographers Blind Wave Productions.

There will be several panels at the con: a panel on comics with Sandy Plunkett, Steve Richter, Terence Hanley, and Ken Eppstein; Self Publishing by Charles Milhouse; Model Making with Jay Pare; Wearable Wounds workshop with Danette Pratt; Light Saber Choreography with Blindwave Productions which leads into the Stage Fighting workshop with Ohio University theater professors Brian Evans and Tom Fiocchi; presentation by Daniel Boyd on his films and graphic novels.  There will be a bullwhip demonstration at 11am with Daniel Trout.  For gaming they will be having a D&D game starting at 11am and Magic starting up at 12:30pm.  Their costume contest begins at 4pm.

The ARTS/West is holding a month-long Pop Culture art exhibit in honor of the con.  Take some time to check out art that represents anything from popular culture. 

Admission is $5 for everyone 11 years and older and kids under 11 get in free.

Just a quick junt over to check out this small, but still fun looking, convention.

Zombiefest WV

Zombiefest is a zombie festival and run operated by The Haunted Barn.  It will be May 10th at Camp Virgil Tate in the Charleston area.

Things start with a 5k obstacle course through woods starting at 7am.  A 5k mountain bike starts over the same course at noon.  At 4pm the zombie run of the same course starts, an obstacle course with zombies chasing you all along the way to steal your life flags.  All you have to do is make it to the finish line with one life flag left.  Cash prizes and awards will be handed out for all the races.  First 1500 to pre-reg for the zombie run get a free zombie run t-shirt.

After all the running and biking then the apocalypse after party starts.  You can hang with special guests at the event: horror legend Tom Savini, actor, stuntman, director,special effects and makeup artist; Tyler Mane, Sabertooth from X-Men movie, Michael Myers in the Halloween remake; Tamara Glynn, Samantha Thomas in Halloween 5; Savana Jade Wehunt and Jeremy Ambler of The Walking Dead; Goldie Fatale and Andie Noir of Fatale Noir Productions; and professorial wrestler The Stro. There will be Zombie Laser Tag provided by Fright nights of Glade Springs Resort, vendors, concession stands with beer.  There will be concerts by Gage, Dead Serious, The Renfields, Fully Justified, Stych N Tyme, and Bobaflex.  Nice line up for hard rock fans.

Registration for the Zombie Run is $75,  regular 5k run is $55, and the bike run is $45.  All tickets include the after party; I think, at least the zombie run does.  Spectator tickets are $20, these do let you into the after party.  They still have room for anyone interested in being a vendor for $250.

Yet another event out there for zombie lovers.  Though those who just like to party should also find it nice.

 

Free Comic Book Day 2014

Once again Free Comic Book Day approaches.  A time to grab a few free comics at your local store and get a sampling of what is out there.  It will be May 3rd this year.

Comics for this year include an Archie Digest, Bongo Free-For-All, DC The New 52, Avatar/Hellboy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hello Kitty, Kaboom Summer Blast, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Spongebob Squarepants, Transformers VS GI Joe, Scrooge McDuck, 2000AD Special, Rocket Raccoon, Atomic Robo, Bleeding Cool Magazine, Buck Rogers, Raising a Reader,  Grimm Fairy Tales, Mouse Guard, Overstreet Comic Book Marketplace, Previews World Spectacular, Sonic/Mega Man Flipbook, Steam Wars, Street Fighter, Teen Titans Go, The Smurfs, The Tick, Top Shelf Kids Club, Valiant Universe Handbook, Worlds of Aspen, and many more.

Basically something for everyone: mainstream fans, indy fans, kids, manga fans, or just anyone who wants something to read.

Participating stores in state include: Purple Earth Comics, Comic World, Lost Legion Games & Comics: The Rifleman, The Vault, The Castle, The Keep; Comic Paradise Plus, Four Horsemen Comics & Gaming, Your Hobby Place, Nerducopia, and Gary’s Comics & More.  So all over really.  The FCBD website has a store locator to help you out.

At the Four Horsemen they will be sponsoring a 24 hour gaming marathon with all proceeds going to Child’s Play.  Child’s Play is a gaming industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in a network of hospitals worldwide, including WVU Children’s Hospital.  The event goes from opening on Saturday till they close on Sunday at 6pm.  There will be a silent auction of items from local businesses and organizations, random giveaways, prizes, Star Wars art show and specials during it.

Oh and remember to buy at least one thing while you are at the shops.  Support your local shop not just for what they sell, but as a place of gather of fandoms.

Vandalia Con is Coming Soon

The steampunk convention in Parkersburg, Vandalia-Con, is coming up on May 2nd at the Blennerhasset Hotel and there the have announced some more exciting events and activities for the weekend.

First steampunk musician Unwoman will be appearing.  Everyone who buys a weekend pass, or higher, will get a free pass to the Parkersburg Arts Center, the Smoote Theatre (an authentic Vaudeville theatre), and tours of some of the Victorian homes in historic Julia-Ann Square.  A live fire performance on Saturday night.  The WV Ghostbusters will be holding kid friendly ghosts hunts on Saturday.  There will be three screenings of the White Zombie movie.  Costume Contest on Sunday with many categories  from best steampunk reimagination of a character to best facial fuzzies.  A Mark Twain impersonator will be giving a performance on Saturday morning.  Also the vendors list has added a number of new dealers, mostly steampunk jewelry and crafts.

They have listed a number of panels and workshops: Piracy in the Steampunk Genre, Mystery Airships of 1897, Victorian caligraphy, Vaudeville, Self Defense with Cane and Umbrella, Professor Bubblemaker Kid Science, A Tribute to Houdini, letter writing workshop, air craft workshop, maker’s workshop, and more.  I will be doing a Nerd Music 101 panel on Saturday at 4pm.

You need JavaScript enabled to viewOn Sunday there will be a parade starting at 12:30pm from the hotel and going to the Riverpoint Park and once at the park there will be a free concert by Unwoman, Professor Bublemaker’s Medicine show, Battle Weary Band, food vendors, health fair, and women’s screening clinic.  All of this will be free and open to the public.  The event goes from 1p to 4pm.

Well if you make it out come and find me to say hi.  Remember the price might be a bit much but it does all go to charity.

 

Blackstone Raid XXIII

The Barony of Blackstone Mountain is hosting Blackstone Raid XXIII from noon on Thursday April 24th through noon on Sunday the 27th at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley.  It is one of the first big camping events for Æthelmearc and is a big inter-kingdom event.

There are several huge martial events (75-120 fighters) on each day to check out: Heavy Weapons tournament, Torchlight Armored Bear Hunt, “Die of Fate” Novelty Fencing, Armored CTF Tournament, AEthelmearc 5000, 7 Pearls Heavy Weapons Championship, Fencing Melee Tactic Drills, Field Battles, Bridge Battles, Bannered Gate Battles, Fencing Melee Scenarios, Thrown and Archery Ranges.

They will have Arts & Science (A&S) Classes in the Assembly Hall on Saturday; these are Basket Weaving, Belly Dancing, Hand Sewing, and Play in the Paint.  Other Saturday events include Paint-A-Blank and Draw-A-Blank Competition, Dirty Dozen Donation Derby, Baron Bardulf’s Photography Studio, Blackstone Mountain Baronial A&S Championship, and Historian’s Point.  Plus check out the merchants that will be there selling weapons, food, leather work, tea, metal work, garb, and more.

You can preregister by check for adults at $18, $9 for those between 7-17, and $54 for a family of two adults and two minors (all other minors of family are free then).  On site registration is adults $20, 7-17 $10, family cap $60, and children under six free.  Day trip prices are $10/$5.  Non-member surcharge of $5 will added to all other fees.  To pre-reg contact Erzebet Fauconneau.

You can bunk at the dorm beds for $15 each or set up camp for free. There are also hotel rooms available at Cedar Lakes.

I am pretty sure I can make it to this for at least a little while on Friday and I would think it would be fun for anyone else to at least watch as well.  Even if I have no idea what some of those events are.

 

Things to do Around Charleston on April 12th

This Saturday April 12th there are a few things going on around Kanawha Valley for nerds to check out.

Kanawha County Libraries and Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society are hosting a celebration of the anniversary of the first manned space flight by Russia’s Yuri Gagarin and first launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle with a star party at Camp Virgil Tate. Road to the Stars: Celebrate Yuri’s Night .  Things start at 6pm with various crafts, games, activities for children of all ages.  When things get dark the KVAS will lead everyone to their Breezy Point Observatory to gaze at the start through a brand new large telescope and various members’ personal ones.  Space is limited so register at the Cross Lanes Library, online, or by calling 304-775-5999.


The Clay Center‘s Sci-Fi Film Series is back with Forbidden Planet.

A starship crew goes on an expedition to investigate the sudden silence of a space colony. They find two survivors – Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira, who have somehow survived a hideous monster that roams the planet. How have they survived the menacing creäture and what is the deadly secret that one of them possesses? Find out in this sci-fi classic!

They will be showing it on Friday April  at 7pm and again on Saturday at 7pm.  Admission is $6 per person. Buy tickets now or at the box office.


Also at the Clay Center’s Walker Theatre, at the rear entrance, will be WV Shakespeare Festival.  All I know about it, is there will be a stage combat workshop from 1-5pm with a performance at 7pm.  It is a free event, but donations will be accepted.


Yet again at the Clay Center, check out The Music of Harry Potter.  Listen to the original music by John Williams from the Harry Potter movies.  Plus, Maestro Cooper will be wearing his sorcerer’s hat and perform a little magic for everyone.
