The Haunted Barn’s 2014 Season

The Haunted Barn was founded ten years ago by National Champion Dancer Lee Jordan and Charleston Police Officer Josh Harper.  From three hallways and four workers to over 30 rooms and 40-50 employees to entertain 3,000 per night.  The barn is the biggest haunted house around.  The title for this year is Nightmares.

The Haunted Barn will be open this year on October 3-4th, 10-11th, 16-18th, 23-25th, 30-31st, and November 1st.  Show times are Thursday 7pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday are 7pm to midnight.

There will be a street party with music, vendors, food, drink, and more hosted by Undead Threads Co every Saturday during haunt season from 7pm to 11pm.

Tickets are $10 or $20 for a VIP pass.  The VIP pass allows you to go to the front of the line, a Casket Ride, and a ticket to a 2nd haunted house, Illusions featuring a Panic Room.  The street party is only $5 if you just want to come hang out and not go through the barn.

The Haunted Barn is also doing a Nitro Monster Run on Saturday October 25th.  Line up starts at noon and the race starts at 12:30pm.  Early registration is $30, after October 1st it is $35.  The run will start at 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street.

The Haunted Barn is a haunted house unlike anything you have ever experienced before. A multi-themed haunted house includes live actors who interact directly with guests, special FX and animatronics props. The Haunted Barn is a scary experience set to engage all of your senses as you make your way through the twists and turns, tunnels and tight passage ways past ghosts, goblins, ghouls, monsters, daemons, and the criminally insane as you attempt to find your way to safety.

Siege of Glengary XIX

Shire of Sylvan Glen of the Society for Creative Anachronism, is hosting Siege of Glengary XIX on Friday September 26 at 4pm through Sunday September 28 at noon at the Jefferson County WV Fairgrounds in Kearneysville in the eastern panhandle.

Our adversaries to the south and to the north have become restless and threaten to invade our borders on a quest for the coveted Sylver Apple Bucket. We must amass our brave soldiers of sword and shield, our masters of dagger, draw and parry, our loosers of arrow, our throwers of ax as well as our wielders of pen, brush and needle to lay waste to this trespass into our fair kingdom.

This year they are adding a Queens Rapier Championship to be held on Saturday September 27.  Other events will include a Siege Points Competition for the Sylver Apple in various armed and gentle arts; heavy, rapier, thrown, archery, atl atl, and A&S.  It will also be home to the InterKindgom Equestrian Worshop.  Other activities separate and part of the Siege Points are a Torchlight Tandem Tourney on Friday night, four bridge battles, four field battles, pick up fighting, fencing scenarios, novelty shoot, GLENO (like bingo but with arrow), Glow Throw tournament, a novelty throw, arts & science competition, siege engines, and more.

The Traveler’s Repast will be on Friday evening for $12.  Breakfast and Saturday Dayboard are included with site fee.

Site fees for adults for the whole weekend are $14.  An additional $5 fee for non-members.  This is a camping event with no additional fee for camping.  Everyone will need to sign an Equestrian Waiver since there will be horses around.  No fee for those 17 and under.

The Shire of Sylvan Glen is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA.org) located in the panhandle of West Virginia. The SCA is a group of people who are interested in researching and recreating aspects of pre-17th century Europe. Things such as various arts and crafts, activities and even simulating the martial combat of the period.

Shockacon 2014

Shockacon the horror/sci-fi convention returns to the Beni Kedem Shrine Center (next to the Civic Center) in Charleston on Friday September 26-28.

Guests for this year’s con are actors Tyler Mane (X-Men, Halloween), Fred Williamson (football player, Dusk till Dawn), Vernon Wells (Road Warrior, Power Rangers), Jennifer Lynn Warren (American Horror Story), John Carl Buechler (special effects artist), Erika Eleniak (Playboy, Dracula 3000), Moses J. Moseley & Theshay West (Walking Dead), Taso Stavrakis (stuntman, makeup artist), David Crawford (Dawn of the Dead), and cosplayer Santana. Local guests Missy Dawn (Porkchop, Pig Girl), Eamon Hardiman (Porkchop, Zombie Babies), Ron Smith (Doctor Who: The Classic Years Regenerated), Jeremy Ambler (Walking Dead), writers Daniel Boyd (Chillers, Carbon), Edward A. Holsclaw II, Rich Bottles Jr (Hellhole West Virginia), K. Michael Gibson (Dead Pulse Rising), cosplayer Elsa Littlepage, several stand up comedians, guest speakers Rudy Panucci (PopCult Blog), Mel Larch (Zombie Research Society), Tiffany Steele (costume FX), Lee Harrah (evolution of the zombie), Chris Woodall (artist), Alaina Damewood (exorcist), and Adam Edwards (prop builder).

Rock bands Renfields, the Big Bad, and the Jasons.  Costume groups WV Ghostbusters, 501st Legion Squad Corella, and Mandalorian Mercs. Get some photo ops with Dalek Gan, a TARDIS, Zombie Killer Motorcycle, Zombie Response Vehicle, and custom hearses by the group Cemetery Knights.

There will be panels, Q&As with guests, music performances, movie showings, workshops, stand up comedy, Wayward girls School of Burlesque performance Friday night, Professor Sinister Savage Sideshow on Saturday night, and more.  On Saturday there will be a Costume Parade that starts at noon and will proceed through the first level of the Charleston Town Center and back to Shockacon.  There are two costume contests, one for 13 and up on Saturday at 4pm and one for 13 and under on Sunday 2pm.  There will be Scream Contests twice each day, each one limited to first 15 entries.

Also an after party at the Blue Parrot on Friday and Saturday night .

Tickets at the door are $50 for the weekend, $22 for Friday, $25 for Saturday, and $16 for Sunday.  Kids 6 and under get in free with an adult.  Show Hours are Friday 3:30pm-11:30pm, Saturday 10:30am-11:30pm, and Sunday 10:30am-4pm.  The vendor area closes at 8pm each day.

The Fam Fiction Tour at Muncheez

The Fam Fiction Tour stars Fresh Kils, Mega Ran, Shaffer The Darklord, and Coolzey performing.  It is nerdcore hip hop meets comedy.  And it is coming to Muncheez Bar & Grill in Beckley on Friday September 26th at 10pm.

Muncheez Bar & Grill mission statement is to bring in the hottest and biggest name shows in all genres to WV than any other location in the state.  They bring consecutive shows to thrill, excite, and compel you.  This weekend they will be having hip hop, country, and rock over three days.

Fresh Kils of The Extremities, a Sound Battle Royale Champion with multiple Juno nominations who has works as an engineer, producer, and now an MC.

Mega Ran aka Random, is one the biggest stars of nerdcore.  A former teacher, he works as both an MC and a producer to make the music he wants.  With a licensing deal from CAPCOM behind him he has released albums inspired by such video games as Mega Man, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania, and many others.

Schaffer The Darklord, from NYC, works as a rapper and comedian who skewers such topics as religious zombies, sci-fi sex fantasies, obsessive cat-enthusiasts, and more suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences.  He is also the co-producer and co-host of EPIC WIN Burlesque.

Coolzey (Zachary Eli Lint) is an Iowa based musician who works in various genres, like hip hop, rock and roll, punk, pop, blues, and more.  He is signed with Deep Thinka Records.

If you are a nerd who has a liking for rap music, you will want to get to this show.  I have not seen the others before, but Mega Ran is one of the best nerdcore rappers out there and does amazing shows.  This is going to be the first time you can see any of these guys in state, so come out and party with us.  Tickets for the show are $10.

 

Talk Like a Pirate Day and Free Doughnuts

Friday September the 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day and Krispy Kreme is running a special promotion for the day.  Go into any store and talk like a pirate and get one free original glazed doughnut.  Go in dressed up like a pirate and get a free dozen original glazed doughnuts.

Your outfit must include at least three of the following items: eye patch, costume hook hand, pirate hat, bandana, peg leg, parrot on shoulder, pirate shirt or at least loose white shirt, point black boots or ragged brown sandals, silver and gold necklaces and earrings, leather belt, have a pirate flag with you, or knickers (um…… what?).  Do not bring in a sword, musket, or any weapon or try to act like you are holding up the place.  Seriously just don’t.

Across the Border: Power Ranger Signing at Inner Geek

The Inner Geek at the Ashland Town Center Mall in Ashland Kentucky, owned by the guy who runs Lexington Comics & Toy Con, will have a special signing event with Jason David Frank of Power Rangers fame Thursday from 5pm to 7pm.

Get an exclusive Power Rangers Megaforce 8×10 there.  No word yet on how much the signing will cost.  There will Power Rangers items at the shop to buy if you do not already have your own item for signing.  Since September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, all proceeds will be donated to a local charity to help children with cancer.

Any fans of Power Rangers, or at least those wanting to check out the shop and help with other nerds, should come on down and help raise a little money for charity.

Jason David Frank is well-known for his role of Tommy Oliver in the long-running children’s television show Power Rangers. Frank’ s character has morphed into the most different power rangers in the show’s twenty year history. He first morphed on the scene as the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger, a bad boy turned good, who after only ten episodes was intended to be written out of the show. However, due to his popularity, Frank’s character was able to morph into the Mighty Morphin White Ranger, Red Zeo, Red Turbo and then returned in 2004 as the Black DinoThunder Ranger.

 

 

Mothman Festival 2014

The 13th Annual Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant is Saturday and Sunday September 20th and 21s this year.  It will go from 10am-10pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday.

There are several things to do and see during the festival.  The Mothman 5k Run will start at 9am on Saturday on Main Street.  The official opening of the festival will be at the grand reopening of the the Mothman Museum at its new location.  The award-winning face painter Jody Riffe will be doing face painting near the Mothman Statue.  DJ Scott, the official Mothman DJ, will be playing music and karaoke all day.

On Saturday there will be the Mothman Movie Night at the State Theater showing the movie White Zombie, a local remake of the 1930’s movie. Several bands will perform over both days.  There are hayride tours of downtown Point Pleasant, bus tours and flyovers of the TNT areas, and tours of the haunted Lowe Hotel, all these have a fee.

You can go look at the Silver Bridge Memorial, Tu-Endie-Wei State Park, and the National Guard Rock Wall all for free.  Things for a few dollars is the Point Pleasant River Muesum, the dinner from the Mothman Prophesies the Harris Steak House, Hillbilly Ziplining, vendors, and pick up some Mothman pancakes.

The guest speakers for this year are Patrecia Gray (paranormal writer), Chad Lambert (comic creator), Neal Parks (paranormal author), Rosemary Guiley (paranormal investigator), Susan Sheppard (executive producer), Craig Woolheater & Nick Redfern (Ufologists), Fred Saluga (cryptozoologist), Sherrie Brake (author), Stan Gordon (Bigfoot researcher), Robin Bellamy (paranormal researcher), Andy Colvin (Mothman photographer), Brian Seech (researcher), Chris McDaniel (investigator), Dale Morton (Mothman costume designer), Joedy Cook (cryptozoologist), and others.  They will be giving lectures on different subjects and a special roundtable discussion on Sunday.

The Miss Mothman Pageant will be both Friday and Saturday.  The Teen, Miss, Ms, and Mrs categories will on Friday night and the children’s pageant on Saturday.  Registration is still open.

For the first time, the festival will have a Friday kick-start event at the Historic State Theater on Main Street.  The will be showing the Mothman Prophecies for free.

This is something for everyone who likes paranormal topics, history, and fairs to come check out.   Come out meet people, see things, learn, have fun, avoid the Men in Black, and buy some souvenirs.
