Once Again Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual event  on the first Saturday of May where participating comic book shops around the world give away special free comic books to those who come to their shop.

You can get comics from such companies as Archie, Bongo, Boom Studios, Dark Horse, DC, IDW, Image, Marvel, Viz Media, Action Lab, Antarctic Press, Aspen, Avatar, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Gemstone Books, Scholastic, Kodansha, Liquid Comics, New England Comics, Oni Press, 2000AD, Red 5, Top Shelf Udon, Valiant, and many more.

In state shops participating are Books-A-Million in Charleston, Your Hobby Place in Martinsburg, Comic Paradise in Fairmont and Morgantown, Gary’s Comics in Morgantown, Lost Legion The Rifleman in South Charleston, and The Castle in Beckley.

Beyond Comics in Shepherdstown is have a creator meet and greet during FCBD.  Danielle Corsetto of Girls with Slingshots, Monica Gallagher of Gods & Undergrads, Rafer Roberts of X-O Manowar, Steven Younkins of Q2Q, and Lee Garvin creator of the card game Bad Ass Zombie Killers.  If you bring a non-perishable food item you can get more free comics
Four Horsemen Comics in Morgantown will be giving away gift certificates, free comic subscriptions, and more.  They will also have the 501st and Rebel Legion will be running a Toy Drive for WVU Children’s hospital, local comic creator Dustin Smith, Sigler Photography will be taking photos, a costume contest at 12:30, and cake at 10am.
Crit Hit Comics & Games in Princeton will have 10% off store-wide.  Star 95 Radio Station will be at the store from noon to 2pm and there will be a costume contest at 1pm.
Lost Legion The Vault in Vienna will have a costume contest and a Pokémon Roaring Skies pre-release event.

CharCon Bonus Round – May the Fourth Roleplaying Weekend

CharCon is hosting an extra event focusing on role playing games called CharCon Bonus Round at the Days Inn Hotel in Flatwood on Saturday May 2nd to Sunday May 3rd.  There will be open gaming Friday night at the hotel too.  Things get started at 9am on Saturday and goes to 7pm on Sunday.  The theme is “May the Fourth Be With You.”

They have two guests for the con.  Christina Stiles is an award-winning RPG writer, editor, developer, and publisher.  She has worked on The Rogue Mage RPG, Midgard Tales, Daughters of Fury, and the upcoming Bite Me! The Gaming Guide to Lycanthropes. She is working on Medusa’s Guide for Gamer Girls. Christina has worked for Atlas Games, Green Ronin Publishing, Kobold Press, Misfit Studios, Paizo Publishing, Troll Lord Games, and White Wolf Studios.  Also artist Michael Mayne.  He co-created the series Bonnie Lass by Red 5 Comics, has worked on Skullkickers, The Dreamer, and has worked as character designer for games Heroes of Newrth and Dragon Vita.

There will games of Star Wars Sparks RPG, Edge of the Empire, Pathfinder Society, Call of Cthulhu, Ponyfinder (My Little Pony version of Pathfinder), D&D 5th edition, Three Dragon Ante, Artems Spaceship Bridge Simulator, Dagohir LARP demos, indy RPGs, and more.  The Appalachian Gamers board game library will be available for open gaming.  A panel on Women in Gaming by Christina Stiles.  Vendors will be set up to check out as well.  There are reports of Nero demos, World of Darkness LARP, Shadowrun, more panels, and other games to come.

Registration is only $25 for the whole weekend.  Pre-reg ends on April 26th.

If you like RPGs or just want to learn come check this event out.  Also could just be a fun weekend to just hang out and party with fellow gamers.

Kicking it Old School Convention

Old School Convention is a being put on by Aaron Hickman as a fundraiser for St. Marys Elementary School in the town of St Marys near Parkersburg.  St. Marys is the oldest functioning school in  WV. The con is on Saturday April 25th from 10am to 5pm at the St Marys School.

They are will have a cosplay contest at 2pm for both adults and children.  Face painting for the kids.  There will be appearances by the WV Ghostbusters, an Elsa cosplayer for photos with the kids, and Larry Parmiter the director of the movie Axeman of Henderson County.  They will be holding a raffle and door prizes with original art from Billy Tucci, prints from Allen Bellman and Cafe Seven Comics, signed WVU football items, autograph photo of George “The Animal” Steele, DVDs, set of Game of Thrones figures, a $50 gift card to 218 shop in Ripley for the women, and more.  Raffle tickets are one for $1, seven for $5, or fifteen for $10.

Vendors are the usual line up of stores and dealers with comic books, action figures, books, wood art, toys, collectibles, artists, CCGs, anime products, cosplay prints, Star Wars items, art prints, and plenty more to check out.

Admission is just $5 for adults and $2 for kids.  All the money goes to the school.

Looks like to me like a little out of the way event which should be fun and for a good cause.

Blackstone Raid XXIV

Society of Creative Anachronism kingdom Barony of Blackstone Mountain will be hosting Blackstone Raid XXIV this year from Thursday April 2nd through Sunday April 26th at Cedar Lakes in Ripley.

There will be displays of work from artisans and craftspeople.  There will be a general Arts & Science competition and a winner to be chosen by populous vote.  One Friday there will be a Tournament of the Masters for fencing, along with open field for pick-ups and workshops on Saturday.  Thrown Weapons and Archery range will be open.  A Royalty Travel Fundraiser, to fund the travel of SCA royalty to events, where you can buy $1 arrows to shoot at targets representing different peerages that will then be matched by said royal.  Heavy Weapons events include Viking Insult, Grand Melee, 500 tournament, Order of the Gage Meet and Beat, and more.

Merchants selling at the event will have such things as leather works, jewelry, books, tankards, armor, handmade soap, and plenty more for the medieval enthusiast.  Onsite food will be handled by Delights of Cathay.

Pre-registration is $18, those between 7 and 17 it is $9, and kids under six free.  On site is $20, $10 for those 7 to 17, and still free for kids under six.  A family of two adults and two minors can pre-reg for $54 or on site for $60.  A day trip, starting at noon on Saturday, is $10 for adults and $5 for those 7 to 17. A surcharge for non-SCA members will apply.

Camping on site is free or you can stay at the Cedar Lakes hotel.  All cabins have been sold out already.

Autocrat for the event is Willem Mac Lear.

I was here last year for a day and found everyone to be really nice and willing to help out.  Plus there were plenty of parties, sessions, and groups to found and join at night.

1d4Con Rolls for Initiative

1d4Con was started by the 1d4cast in 2014 in Northern Virginia.  For their second year they needed more space and find it by moving the con into WV.  1d4Con from Friday April 17th to Sunday April 19th at the Comfort Inn Aikens Center in Martinsburg.  Registration starts at noon, Opening Ceremonies at 1pm, and games start at 2pm .

Scheduled RPGs include 13th Age, Advanced D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Double Cross, Dragon Age, Dread, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Fate, Feng Shui, GURPS, Whispering Road, Savage Worlds, Star Wars SAGA, Shadowrun, Marvel Heroic RPG, and Doctor Who RPG.  Other games include V:TM and W:TA LARPs; Buffy the Vampire Slayer board game, D&D Attack Wing, Heroclix, Star Wars Attack Wing, Bolt Action wargame, and tournaments for Steve Jackson’s Frag and Munchkin.  They will also have a game library with games to check out.

The con is running a Charity Drive called Games of Charity.  It works by buying tickets that give special boons to certain games you can play over the weekend (re-rolls, bonuses to rolls).  All proceeds will be given to The Red Wagon Ministry, a charity that helps low-income families with infant needs.  There will also be a charity raffle Saturday night.  Games of Charity tickets are $1 and the raffle tickets are $2.

Groups running games are Pathfinder Society, D&D Adventurers League, Greyhawk Reborn, Men in Black, and Martinsburg by Night,

Musician and podcaster Jonah Knight will be giving musical performances on each day.  Jonah performs paranormal folk, supernatural steampunk, and creepy Christmas songs.  The ghost hunting team Ghosts in SIGHT will be present for Q&A and autographs.  Blackstone Entertainment are premiering their newest RPG Mystos at the con.

Several vendors will be at the con selling games, books, gaming accessories, handmade items, and more.

Pre-registration is $30 for a weekend pass, $25 for a two pass, $15 for Saturday, and $10 for Friday or Sunday.  Pre-reg closes April 8th.  At door prices are $35 for weekend.
