15th Annual Free Comic Book Day

It is that wonderful time of the year, the 15th Annual Free Comic Book Day.  This year it is on May 7th.

There are 50 different comics this year to choose from several different genres and publishers.  Comics include offerings of Archie, Bob’s Burgers, Bongo Comics, Boom sampler, Marvel’s Civil War II, two Dark Horse sampler, Doctor Who, ROM, Suicide Squad, Valiant, Pokémon, 2000 AD sampler, Assassin’s Creed, Attack on Titan, Bruce Lee, Captain America, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Con Man’ Spectrum, DC Super Hero Girls, Love and Rockets, Grumpy Cat, Lady Mechanika, Devil’s Due/1First mixtape, Overstreet Comic Guide, Phantom, Pink Panther, Nickelodeon, Sonic, Spongebob Square Pants, Stan Lee, Strawberry Shortcake, Street Fighter, Tick, One-Punch Man, Aspen Comics, and several others for both adults and kids.

Stores doing something special for the dare are Lost Legion Games & Comics: The Riflemen in South Charleston will have a meet and greet with Daniel Boyd; Hillbilly Toy Chest in Milton will have JR Earls doing sketches, Pokemon TCG tournament, free hotdogs, and major discounts are items; Crit Hit Comics & Games in Princeton is having 10% off sale and  costume contest at 11am; Comic Paradise Plus2 in Morgantown will have an appearance by Chad Cicconi; Comic World in Huntington is having a big sale and costume contest; Lost Legion Games & Comics: The Vault in Vienna will have a Dungeon Crawl Challenge with Dwarven Forge 3D dungeon, a costume contest, board games, Magic and Pokémon tournaments, and discounts; Beyond Comics in Shepherdstown with Steve Younkins and bring in non-perishable food items to get more free comics.

Other places taking part are Books-A-Million in Charleston, Lost Legion Games & Comics: The Castle in Beckley, Comic Paradise Plus in Fairmont, Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming in Morgantown, Gary’s Comics and More in Morgantown, and Purple Earth Comics in Huntington.

So mark your calendars and plan your attack of shops.  If you are a comic fan, a newbie, or someone looking to get back into it, this is a good day to get some samples.

CharCon Bonus Round 2016

CharCon’s Bonus Round of Roleplaying and SciFi weekend presented by Shentel Communications returns to the Flatwoods Days Inn and Suites Conference Center in Sutton this Saturday April 30th through Sunday May 1st.  This year includes table top gaming and science fiction and horror events.

RPGS over the weekend will include Pathfinder, SPARKS, Ponyfinder, Confluence, Dungeon & Dragons, and more.  Other games will include Kaiju Kaos, play to win board games, Looney Labs Werewolf, and others with a board game library to check out games from.  The ARTEMIS: Space Bridge Simulator will be back.  Shentel  will be holding a video gaming lounge again as well.  The event is also an official International Tabletop Day location and will be showing the official live ITD video stream all day Saturday.

Besides the gaming there will be panels, a screening room on Sunday, costuming, vendors and green screen photo booth.  The Mandalorian Mercs and WV Ghostbusters will be in attendance.  Other guests for the year are artist Michael Mayne, author Brian J. Hatcher, Mountain State Paranormal, and Frank and Jane Gabor of Fairmont State’s Folklife Center.  Panels will be on costume make-up, ghost hunting, Mountain Monsters, painting, and more.

Cost for the weekend is $25.  You can still register.

This is an event for gamers or those who want to learn about gaming.

1d4Con 2016

1d4Con, the convention from the 1d4cast, is back this year from Friday April 15th at to Sunday April 17 at the Comfort Inn Aikens Center in Martinsburg.  Doors and registration start at noon on Friday and gaming starts at 2pm.

Games scheduled for this year include Car Wars, Firefly Board Game, Frostgrave, Malifaux, The Quiet Year, Mind’s Eye Theater LARPs, X-Files Board Game along with their game library.  RPGs for this are 13th Age, Call of Cthulhu, Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space, Dread, Dungeons & Dragons (Advanced 1st edition and 5th edition with D&D Adventure League and Greyhawk Reborn), Fate Core, Fantasy Age, GURPS, Lady Blackbird, Marvel Superheroes (Project: Crusaders rules), Gumshoe, Robotech: Shadow Chronicles, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, Stars Wars (Age of Rebellion, Edge of Empire, and Saga Edition), and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.  Plus they have Play to Win board games of Between Two Cities and Viticulture.  They have special tournaments as well: 1d4Con Frag Championship, 1d4Con Munchkin Madness, and Warmachines Appalachian Cup Qualifier.

They will have panels for the first time.  They are Evil GMing, Designing Adventures for Fantasy RPGs, Costuming for LARPs, Diceless Tabletop Roleplaying, and Heroic Gaming 101.  They have a vendors room, open space for open gaming, movie screenings, and more.

Games of Charity Drive is 1d4Con’s special fundraiser for The Red Wagon Ministry.  Players, and GMs, can purchase tickets for $1 that they can use in certain games to gain special boons, such as re-rolls or bonuses to rolls.  They will also be holding a raffle (which they are calling an auction) with the winners being pulled on Saturday night.  Raffle tickets are $2 each.

Pre-registration is already closed, but at door registration is $35 for the weekend, $25 for two days, $15 for Saturday, and $10 for Friday or Sunday.  Children 10 and under get in free with an adult.

Looks like a nice fun con for gamers to play at.
