Power Up 2017

The Tri-State retro video game convention Power Up returns this Saturday September 2nd from 11am to 7pm at the Conference Center of the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington.

Plenty of vendors selling old and new video games, consoles, ROM Hacks, peripherals, homebrew games to buy or test, and more.  Extra Life Game Repair will be on hand to repair anything you need help with; part of the proceeds from repairs will go the Children’s Hospital at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Plus vendors and exhibitors selling comics, figures, art, buttons, patches, card games, cosplay prints, plush, and other creations and items to buy.  Joe’s Magical Foundation will have a photo booth with special background images to create custom pictures.  They will be donating their money to charity as well.  And look out for tables doing give aways.

Besides just a room full of video games to play, there will be a Super Smash Bro tournament for a $50 gift card at noon.  Various other mini tournaments in different genres will pop up through out the day to get in on.  They also have Pokémon Gym Leaders for 3v3 battles to win badges.

There will be a Power Down room to get away from all the action.  The Huntington Unplugged Gaming Society will have board games to try, Hometown Hobbies will be running a Magic: The Gathering modern format tournament for a $100 gift card, Pokémon TCG  tournaments, video game trivia with Electric Tapes, and Final Form Fusion will be doing some belly dancing at noon,

Admission is $5 and free for kids twelve and under.  This year’s t-shirts will be available for $20.  Leftovers from previous year’s will be $15.

Fans for video gaming will want to go to this.  Great shopping and people to meet.

WV Pop Con 2017

This year’s WV Pop Con is Saturday August 26th and Sunday August 27th at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

This year’s featured guests are from Action Lab Entertainment, who are celebrating five years, Chad Cicconi (NFL Rush Zone), Bill McKay (Zombie Tramp, Vampblade), Shawn Gabborin (Fracture), Bryan Seaton (Dollface), and Dan Mendoza (Zombie Tramp).  They are offering an exclusive Danger Doll Squad variant cover at the con.

Other guests are Andrew Carter (Habitat Against Humanity),  J.R. Mounts (Scairy Tales Noir), David Newbold (Runaways), Jason Lenox (King Conan), Electro-Magnetic Press, and YouTube channel Let’s Play All The Games.

There will also be plenty of other artist and exhibitors; selling their own comics, prints, portraits, cosplay items, books, tattoo artists, geeky crafts, candles, soaps, card games, jewelry, steampunk sculptures, perler art, clothing, and more creative items.

Cosplay guests and groups for the show are 501st Legion Garrison Corellia, Rebel Legion, Amtgard, Mandalorian Mercs Black Mountain Guard, Bunny Bombshell, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Vintage Theatre Company, and the WV Ghostbusters.

Vendors will have a variety of items a the con including Funkos, figures, comics, graphic novels, table-top gaming, video games and consoles, t-shirts, collectables, plush items, leather goods, toys, cards, posters, weapons, and more.

Events for the con include Cartoon Theme Song Sing-A-Long Bingo, an anime theater, kids costume contest on Saturday and an adult one on Sunday, food vendors, Outer Rim Praxeum Lightsaber School demos, Paint Me Pokémon, and panels.  Let’s Play All The Games are running retro video game tournaments on Saturday.  Tournaments are Tecmo Super bowl, Tekken 3, and WWE Day of Reckoning 2, all are $5 to enter.  Cartridges Galore are running tournaments of Smash Brothers Melee and Goldeneye on Sunday with a $10 entry fee.  Pop-up tournaments are possible throughout the weekend plus open gaming areas for all.  For tabletop gaming there will be Pathfinder Society of WV, games of Munchkin, and Magic: The Gathering tournaments.

Tickets are $10 per day or $18 for two days if you order online.

Another fun con with lots of different people to see, even if I am not sure what they are all there for.

First Willcon

The first Williamson Pop Culture and Entertainment Convention, Willcon, takes place this Saturday August 26th at the Williamson Field House in Williamson from 10am to 6pm.  The event is put on by the Williamson Convention Visitor Bureau and meant to give the Tug Valley area an event to attract fans of all kind.

Their line-up of guests are Bram Stoker Award winning editor Michael Knost, writers Steven Paul Watson, Chris Estep; Old World Comics & Killers Serials; film makers Sal Lizard, Funtime Productions, the Green Goblin head from the movie Maximum Overdrive; cosplayers Noble Armory, Xehnis Cosplay; Jeremy Ambler, effects studio Hainted FX, band Black Coal Brass Quintet, Transformers Bumblebee replica, light saber combat Odd Todd’s Tournament of Champions, and comic creator Travis Tomblin.

They will have a special exhibit from the art departments from local high schools and others.  Plus several artists in attendance.  Their line up of vendors will be selling video games and consoles, gaming supplies, comic books, graphic novels, board and card games, RPGs, toys, action figures, POPS, art, plush, jewelry, crochet items and other nerdy crafts, steampunk apparel, totes, and more.

The will have laser tag from Autannaco Family Fun Center, two escape rooms from Adventure Games, face painting, panels on anime and Game of Thrones, Pokémon Scavenger Hunt, cosplay contest, light saber battle demo, photo studio, music performances, writer’s workshop, and more.  Table top gaming will be hosted by Play and Paint and include table game demos, gaming library, tournaments for Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokémon TCG.  Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros tournaments by Rare Drops.

Admission is just $5 and free for kids under 10.

Another small event with a little bit of all kinds of fandoms for everyone to enjoy.
