Once Again Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is an annual event  on the first Saturday of May where participating comic book shops around the world give away special free comic books to those who come to their shop.

You can get comics from such companies as Archie, Bongo, Boom Studios, Dark Horse, DC, IDW, Image, Marvel, Viz Media, Action Lab, Antarctic Press, Aspen, Avatar, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Gemstone Books, Scholastic, Kodansha, Liquid Comics, New England Comics, Oni Press, 2000AD, Red 5, Top Shelf Udon, Valiant, and many more.

In state shops participating are Books-A-Million in Charleston, Your Hobby Place in Martinsburg, Comic Paradise in Fairmont and Morgantown, Gary’s Comics in Morgantown, Lost Legion The Rifleman in South Charleston, and The Castle in Beckley.

Beyond Comics in Shepherdstown is have a creator meet and greet during FCBD.  Danielle Corsetto of Girls with Slingshots, Monica Gallagher of Gods & Undergrads, Rafer Roberts of X-O Manowar, Steven Younkins of Q2Q, and Lee Garvin creator of the card game Bad Ass Zombie Killers.  If you bring a non-perishable food item you can get more free comics
Four Horsemen Comics in Morgantown will be giving away gift certificates, free comic subscriptions, and more.  They will also have the 501st and Rebel Legion will be running a Toy Drive for WVU Children’s hospital, local comic creator Dustin Smith, Sigler Photography will be taking photos, a costume contest at 12:30, and cake at 10am.
Crit Hit Comics & Games in Princeton will have 10% off store-wide.  Star 95 Radio Station will be at the store from noon to 2pm and there will be a costume contest at 1pm.
Lost Legion The Vault in Vienna will have a costume contest and a Pokémon Roaring Skies pre-release event.

Halloween ComicFest 2014

Halloween ComicFest is like Free Comic Book Day, only it is the Saturday before Halloween and features more scary and horror related comics.  That means this Saturday October 25th.

There will be full size comics from Archie, DC with Batman, Avatar Press, Zenescope Entertainment, Action Lab, Marvel Comics, Aspen, IDW with MY Little Pony, Abstract Studios, and Viz Media.  There are also mini-comics, smaller size but same great taste, with Angry Birds, Betty & Veronica, Boom! Studios, Little Battlers Experience, Mermin, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Vamplets.

There is also a costume contest to go along with the event.  To enter, pick up one of the free comics, take a picture holding one of the comics in costume, upload your photo in one of five categories (comics, TV/movie, gamer, horror, original), write a short description, and then share your photo with others to get votes.  Two random grand prize winners will win $500 shopping spre at a participating comic shop.  Two random winners in each category will win a $100 shopping spree.  The two costumes that receive the most votes in category will also receive a Prize Pack from one of the Halloween ComicFest Sponsors.

Fright Nights at The Resort at Glade Springs

The Resort at Glade Springs at Daniels near Beckley presents, for the 5th year, Fright Nights 2014.  Frights Nights is an outdoor haunted attraction open rain or moonlight.  It has been voted #1 Haunted Attraction in Southern WV for the last three years.  Open Friday and Saturday from October 10th to November 1st open from 7pm to 10:30pm.

New this year is Movie Mayhem Haunted Trail  at the haunted Glade Springs Theater.

3D Nightmare is 5000 square feet of floating walls, moving floors, and terror around every corner that will mess with your head while wearing 3D glasses.  Things are twice as big this year.

Also new is Uncle Hershel’s Ride of Terror, ride around the dark woods in a hayride as you go to visit Uncle Hershel.

And of course the live action apocalyptic event Zombie Hunt.  Join a laser tag zombie game for you and your friends.

Dickey’s BBQ will serving BBQ and beef brisket chili on site.  Small Talk Cafe will have sweets and snacks there as well.

Also this year Foley Orthodontics presents a No-Scare-Trick-or-Treat on October 26th from 4pm-6pm. Experience the Movie Mayhem Haunted Trail with Treats and no Tricks. Come with your family in costume and bring a bag to collect treats on the trail. Tickets are $5 per person for everyone over three and free for kids two and under.

Tickets are are as followed: $10 for Zombie Hunt, $15 for Movie Mayhem and 3D Nightmare or Uncle Hershel’s Ride of Terror, $25 for Movie Mayhem and 3D Nightmare with fast pass, $30 for a combo ticket of all events, and $45 for combo ticket with fast pass.  Groups of 20+ can get 20% discount per ticket if ordered on the website as one order.  $1 from every ticket will be donated to the United Way.

Get one nights lodging on Friday, breakfast, and a Fright Nights combo ticket for one $62 per person at the Glades Springs Resort.

This is something fans of haunted attractions, zombie hunting, and general terror are going to want to go see.

Rocket Boys Festival 2014

The Rocket Boys Festival is this weekend Friday October 3rd through Sunday October 5th in Beckley.  Most of the events will be at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine (BECM) at the New River Park.  The mine will be open during the weekend at special discounts.  The Rocket Boys are Homer Hickam, Roy Lee Cooke, Jimmie O’Dell Carroll, and Billy Rose.




Events start on Friday at 9am with the Rocket Boys holding a meet and greet with middle and high school students at the BECM.  Later from noon till 1:30pm the Rocket Boys 2014 Prodigy Teacher of the Year Award Luncheon.  Tickets for the event are $20 for adults, $15 for teachers, and $10 for students.  At 2pm an Actors Workshop with Chris Ellis and Danny Boyd will be held.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for teachers and students.  A Writer’s Workshop with Homer Hickam and three guests authors will be at 4pm.  Adult Tickets are $25, student and teacher tickets are $15.  Friday night concerts at Woodrow Wilson High School, brought to you by the Beckley Concert Association, will start at 7:30pm with The Entertainers and Bill Halley’s Comet.

On Saturday the Beckley Half Marathon/5k starts at 8am in the streets of Beckley.  Registration for the Buddy Walk begins at 8am and the walk starts at 9am at the New River Park.  Opening Ceremonies will be on the Main Stage at the BECM at 9am.  There will educational displays, food, crafts, writer’s row, science row (new this year), and specialty vendors around different parts of the BECM.  At 11:30am the Third Annual WV State Championship of Paper Airplane Flight will be held, entry fee is $2.  Concerts start at 10am and go to 5pm with Jeffery Joe Buckland, Dino Man and Johnny Staats and the Delivery Boys.  From 1:30pm to 5pm the Third Annual Rocket Launch Contest runs at the First Community Bank Launch Pad.  From 2pm to 3pm the Live Round Song Contest will be judge at the BECM.  Chili Night starts in Uptown Beckley at 6pm.  There will be a screening of October Sky at the Raleigh Playhouse and Theater in Uptown Beckley.  There will be open remarks from the Rocket Boys.

On Sunday there will be tours to Coalwood leaving at 11am and returning at 4pm.  There will be lunch in Coalwood.  Roy Lee Cooke will be along as well.  Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students.

Fans of science, history, and festivals will not want to miss this one.

The Fam Fiction Tour at Muncheez

The Fam Fiction Tour stars Fresh Kils, Mega Ran, Shaffer The Darklord, and Coolzey performing.  It is nerdcore hip hop meets comedy.  And it is coming to Muncheez Bar & Grill in Beckley on Friday September 26th at 10pm.

Muncheez Bar & Grill mission statement is to bring in the hottest and biggest name shows in all genres to WV than any other location in the state.  They bring consecutive shows to thrill, excite, and compel you.  This weekend they will be having hip hop, country, and rock over three days.

Fresh Kils of The Extremities, a Sound Battle Royale Champion with multiple Juno nominations who has works as an engineer, producer, and now an MC.

Mega Ran aka Random, is one the biggest stars of nerdcore.  A former teacher, he works as both an MC and a producer to make the music he wants.  With a licensing deal from CAPCOM behind him he has released albums inspired by such video games as Mega Man, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania, and many others.

Schaffer The Darklord, from NYC, works as a rapper and comedian who skewers such topics as religious zombies, sci-fi sex fantasies, obsessive cat-enthusiasts, and more suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences.  He is also the co-producer and co-host of EPIC WIN Burlesque.

Coolzey (Zachary Eli Lint) is an Iowa based musician who works in various genres, like hip hop, rock and roll, punk, pop, blues, and more.  He is signed with Deep Thinka Records.

If you are a nerd who has a liking for rap music, you will want to get to this show.  I have not seen the others before, but Mega Ran is one of the best nerdcore rappers out there and does amazing shows.  This is going to be the first time you can see any of these guys in state, so come out and party with us.  Tickets for the show are $10.


October Sky Rocket Boys Festival

The October Sky Rocket Boys Festival will be in Beckley again this year.  It is a celebration about the Rocket Boys, a group of amateur rocketers from Coalwood in McDowell County who won a National Science Fair gold mine and several of them went onto work with various science fields.  Their story was record in the memoir of Homer Hickman and in the movie October Sky.

Special guests for the festival are several of the original Rocket Boys, Chris Owen one of the stars of October Sky, Russell L. Werneth from NASA, and Andy Jackson festival photographer.

Events get started with WV Speaks UP, a “Conference of Ideas,” on October 2 and 3 at the Tamarack.  Forty eight of West Virginia’s most motivated and enlightened mind will be Beckley to give a seven minutes presentation on their idea to better the state.  The first session is from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday and the three more on Thursday.  Other events on Thursday are the Teacher of the Year Award ceremony at 6pm-7pm and the Spirit of the Coalfields Awards.

The main events for the festival start on Friday: screenings of October Sky with one the Rocket Boys starts and a writing workshop with Homer Hickam at the Tamarrack.  Chris Owen will do an acting workshop and October Sky screening at the Raleigh Playhouse and Theater for $10 starting at 6pm.  A Friday night concert starts at 7:30pm at the Woodrow Wilson Auditorium.  Tickets available online.

Then on Saturday even more stuff goes down.  The festival takes place mostly at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine (BECM) and New River Park (NRP) but some events are around at other places.  There will be educational displays, food, crafts, a “writer’s row”, specialty vendors, a 5K run,  The Buddy Walk, planetarium, blood drive, BECM tours, the Second Annual WV State Championship of Paper Airplane Flight, a rocket launch, live music, fire hydrant painting contest, a Hot Dog Eating Contest, live round song contest, and WV Dance company performing.  Then at night, Chili night in Uptown Beckley with the Rocket Boys as guest judges starts.

On Sunday a motor coach departs for Coaldwood at 9am from Tamarrack and returns at 4pm.  Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students.

Magic: The Gathering State Tournament

So on Saturday October 13th, we have Tsubasacon in Huntington, Jedicon WV in the northern panhandle, zombie walk in Morgantown, WV Book Festival in Charleston, and now for Beckley we have the 2012 Magic WV State Tournament at the Beckley Convention Center put on by the Lost Legion Game and Comic Stores.


The main tournament is Standard format with a $25 entry fee.  Several side events and drafts will also be run through out the day.  Show starts at 9am.

The winner of the tournament gets a seat in the $50,000 Max Point Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana.

All local game stores that do Friday Night Magic events can get two free passes to the state championship to give out.  Contact David Whelan of Lost Legion.  You can get one of these passes as a player at all four Lost Legion Games & Comic locations (Beckley, Princeton, South Charleston, and Vienna), Four Horseman in Morgantown, Hometown Hobbies in Huntington, The Gathering in Saint Albans, and Champion Cards in Charleston.  Play FNM and possibly win free passes to the championship.
