WV Pop Con 2016

WV Pop Con is back this Saturday August 27 from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 28th from 11am to 5pm at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

Featured creator guests at the show are Dominike “Domo” Stanton (Starbrand and Nightmask, character illustrator for Archer), Chad Cicconi (sketch card artist), Steve Geiger (former managing art director of Marvel), Justin Jordan (Shadowman, Call of Duty Zombies), Bill McKay (Zombie Tramp, Vampblade), Rafter Roberts (Archer and Armstrong, Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, The God Child), and Shawn Gabborin (found member and editor in chief of Action Lab Entertainment).

There will be plenty of other exhibitors there: illustrators, writers, comic creators, nerdy crafters, an all girl robotics team, game creators, painters, Electro-Magnetic Press and other small publishers, sculptors, photographers, cosplayers, podcasters, tattoo artists, Ghostbusters, filmmakers, Rebel Legion, College Football Hall of Famer Major Harris, Amtgard, pro wrestler Ricky Morton, 501st, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Black Mountain Guard, Pathfinder Society, and more.

Not to mention vendors selling comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, gaming supplies, t-shirts, collectables, toys, plush, books, video games, crafts, buttons, leather work, weapons, posters, and plenty more.

They will have a kid’s cosplay contest on Saturday and an adult one on Sunday, various panels, games of Pathfinder, Magic: The Gathering tournament, other gaming demos, gaming library, and retro video games.

Admission at the door will be $20 for both days.  They will also have exclusive covers for sell for Generation Zero and two different Prince-S STARthief done by guests for sell at the show.

A comic show with a lot of variety for fans of all kinds of genres.

TriCon V

Tri-State Comic Con (Tricon) celebrates its fifth year with their biggest year yet.  The con is this Saturday June 4th from 10am to 6pm at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington.

Big named guest for this year are Rikki Simons voice of GIR from Invader Zim and a writer of prose and comics of his own, WWE Hall of Famer “The Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase, Ed Brisson comic writer currently working on the Sons of Anarchy comic, Beau Smith creator and writer of the Wynonna Earp comic which has been turned into a TV series on SyFy, Dave Aikins illustrator for Nickelodeon products and zombies, Darryl Banks famed for co-creating Kyle Rayner, DC Comics inker Jonathan Glapion, two-time Harvey Award winning writer Chad Lambert, writer on Uncanny X-Men Jay Leisten, Brian Level co-creator of Image’s The Mantle, Tommy Patterson artist on Game of Thrones comic, and illustrators Andy Bennett, Eryk Donovan, Rob Dumo, Nate Lovett, Drew Moss, Mark A. Robinson, Uko Smith, Justin Stewart, Kyle Strahm, and Nicholas “Iowa” Wentland.

Indy comic creator appearing include KC Anderson of Wafflecus, Tressina Bowling of Dracullama, Todd Beistel of Yuri: The Gypsy Hunter, Coffman 20XX of Araura, Landon Franklin of Zokusho, Timothy Fuller of Zombie Marge, Travis Horseman of Amiculus, Shawn Murphy of Meachanaflux, Lauren Sparks of Cats Talking Words, Jason Pell of Zombie Highway, and the guys from Support Group.  Plus artists Edward Choi, Todd Frazer, Tristan Kelly, Jesse Marks, Michael Mayne, Amanda Scharf, and Jimbo Valentine, authors Rob E. Boley, Edward S. Brenwalt, Russ Lippitt, and E.E. Martin, small publishers Broken Icon Comics, Electromagnetic Press, Headshrinker Press, Mourning Daily Publishing, and Old World Comics.  Plus podcasters the Standard Nerds, D20 Girls Project, and Power Up will be set up along with a few charities out in the atrium.

You can expect plenty of vendors with a wide variety of goods.  Comics, graphic novels, manga, toys, board and card games, figurines, card sets, collectibles, leather works, knitting, steampunk jewelry, t-shirts, decals, posters, buttons, and so much more.

For those looking for photo opportunities, you can get them with the con’s Ambassador of cosplay Harley Heartthrob, the Mandalorian Mercs Black Mountain Guard, the WV Ghost Busters with their 30ft Staypuff Marshmallow Man, a Supernatural themed Impala with a trunk load of weapons, and the actual shed used in Evil Dead 2.

For events they will have panels on cosplay, making your own comics, inking comics, and a Q&A about working for Image.  A charity auction for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and a costume contest for cash prizes and medals.  For the first time there will be gaming going on at the con.  The Goblin Traders will be hosting Force of Will and Magic: The Gathering tournaments along with board game and Star Wars X-Wing minis demos starting at 11am.  The Friday night before the con, they are having their 2nd annual Drink and Draw at Sharkeys.  There will be live drawing from 8pm to Midnight.

Tickets are only $10 and free for kids 10 and under.  They will also have for sell limited edition exclusive comic cover of Army of Darkness for sell.

This is con is just a must to see.  Lots of good creators to meet, things to buy, people to meet, and things to do.  All for a good price.

 

JCPL Annual Mini-Con

Jackson County Public Library is having their second annual Mini-Con this Saturday May 21st from 10am to 5pm at the main library in Ripley.

Some of the things they will be doing at the event are a craft and Lego maker space plus writing and art contests.  They will have a costume contest with winners in four different age groups.  There will be appearances from cosplay model Harley Heartthrob, the 501st, Black Mountain Guard, and the Rebel Legion.  There will be a Smash Brothers mini-tourney, Pathfinder RPG, D&D minis, Magic: The Gathering tournaments, and other games to play.  Plus vendors selling comics, toys, table top and video games, and more.

Looks like a quick little fun event for anyone who can make it up to hang out, meet people, and have fun.

Mini-Con is primarily a literacy outreach geared to encourage and foster a life long love of reading through the use of comics, gaming and other out of the box methodologies. It is an event to engage the local community and encourage the use of the library and all of its resources by tapping into the creative spirit of all individuals and providing a safe place for them to be embraced, to learn, and to grow.

 

Old School Convention 2016

Old School Convention returns for its second year, this time at the Pleasants County Middle School in Belmont on Saturday April 2nd from 10am to around 4pm.  The money from the show goes to benefit the oldest school in the West Virginia.

They will have Trapper from Destination TV’s Mountain Monsters, Jeremy Ambler from the Walking Dead, local author Joseph Burdette, professional wrestler Chance Prophet, the Black Mountain Guard of Mandalorian Mercs, and musicians Harrah and Matthew Elder.

Vendors will have comics, toy, figures, Funkos, vintage football cards, Magic cards, anime, manga, games, Transformers, vintage video games and more.  As well as artists set up to sell and do commissions.

They will have face painting, caricatures, a costume contest at 1:15pm, pictures with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna from Frozen from 11am-1pm, music performances, starting at 2pm, and a raffle with many donated items with the drawing after 3pm.  Plus there will be two different Magic: The Gathering tournaments run by Arcane Games Store.

Again, another nice little convention to hang out and buy from, all for a good cause.

 

Classic Plastics Expo 2016

The third annual Classic Plastic Toy and Comic Expo is March 5th at the Parkersburg Art Center in Parkersburg from 10am to 6pm.  The show is put on by Classic Plastics Toy Store which is right down the street from the show.  All proceeds of the show go to the Parkersburg Art Center and local Red Cross Disaster Relief.

The Guest of Honor for the show is Timothy Zahn, Stars Wars Expanded Universe author and New York Times Bestseller.  Featured guests are Jordan Patton from Face-Off who will be promoting his new project Deadnecks and Kim D.M. Simmons, photographer of the original Star Wars figure packaging.  Bands Alien 3000, Betrayed by the Bullett, and Harrah will each be playing an acoustic set.

Costume groups 501st Legion, Causplayers, Ghostbusters WV Division, and Madalorian Mercs Black Mountain Guard will be around for pictures and cosplayer help.  Artist and comic creators who will be at the show are Jason Lewis, 21 Pulp, River City Design, JR Earls, Evan Bevins, Nathan Scott Arnold, author Terry W. Ervin II, Jason Pell, Doomsday Designs, caricaturist J.D. Williamson, and Ren McKinzie.

Vendors and dealers will be a mix of regional stores, personal collectors, and craftsmen selling comics, anime, manga, board games, action figures, models, prop items, steampunk jewelry, video games and systems, Pez, My Little Pony, plush, card games, collectibles, Hot Wheels, banks, handmade accessories, sport cards, books, and so much more.

Others who will be setting up are Remix Pro Wrestling, Jedicon WV, podcast Dueling Ogres, Doctor Who: Classic Series Regenerated, 605 Wrestling, Hades Ladies Roller Derby, Bunny Bombshell, and Hawthron Tarot Card reader.

They will have a cosplay contest and a raffles.  Dueling Ogres will be recording a show there.  Rare Drops will be running their game room with several tournaments like Smash 1v1 and Mario Kart N64.  There will be concessions sold at the show as well.

$5 per person, kids 10 and under get in free.

A show with a bit everything for everyone out there especially toy and comic collectors.  At a low price and a good cause.

Mountain State Pop Expo

The first Mountain State Pop Expo will be Saturday November 7th from 10am to 6pm at the Town Center Marriott in Charleston.  All vendor table costs, admission, and raffle ticket sales from this event will go to the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia to help the area’s neediest kids this holiday season.

For events they will have several panels on cosplaying and make-up, an acoustic concert by metal band HARRAH, a costume contest, and a raffle.  There will be a game room and tournaments run by Rare Drops.  The costume contest will have awards for kids 12 and under, original design, and different levels of craftsmanship voted on by local cosplayers.  The raffle has items donated from vendors, IDW, Braxton County tourism, and even WV Fandoms Blog.

Vending at the event will be local shops, crafters, and artists of all kinds.  They will be selling items such as book, art prints, toys, comics, video games, jewelry, vitamins, plushies, collectibles, games, and more.

Cosplay groups Mandalorian Mercs, WV Ghostbusters, Causeplayers, and the D20 Girls Project will be in attendance. The new magazine The Charleston Anvil will be making their début at the show.  Indy wrestling federation IWA East Coast will also attend.

It is only $5 to attend, free for those under 10 with an adult.

This is a good show for any nerd to shop and hang out with fellow nerds.  Also helps out a good cause.

WV Pop Con 2015

WV Pop Con returns to Mylan Park in Morgantown this Saturday August 22nd from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 23rd from 11m to 5pm.

Creator guests include comic creators, artists, authors, crafters, design studios, costumers, and more.  Featured guests are Mike McKone (Avengers Academy, Justice League United), Thomas Zahler (Love and Capes, My Little Pony), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, God Child), Chad Cicconi (sketch cards, NFL Rush Zone), Bill McKay (Zombies vs Cheerleaders, Danger Zone), and Dennis Budd (sketch card artist) .  Some of WV’s finest who will be there include featured guest James Patrick (Green Arrow, Pulp 21) and Robert Tinnell (Feast of the Seven Fishes, Wicked West); Jason Pell (Zombie Highway, Season’s End), Rich Bottles Jr. (Hellhole West Virginia, Lumberjacked),  Larry Morgan (Electro-Magnetic Press), Grinning Fox Customs, Dustin Smith (Knight Hunter), David Newbold (Runaways, Weapon X), Dusty Catlett, Implexity Designs, Angi D*signs, Garrick Gilmore, Josh Floquet, Andrew Carter (Let’s Play All The Games, Habitat Against Humanity) and others.

Gaming will include Magic tournaments hosted by Nerducopia, West Virginia Pathfinder Society, a table top and retro gaming libraries and demos.  The costume contest is Sunday at 3pm.  Sign-up at the Illusive Skull booth at the con.

Admission is $10 for each day or $18 for two days.  Children under 10 get in free with an adult.   You can purchase before hand online or at Comic Paradise Plus in Fairmont or Westover.
