Blackstone Raid XXVI

Blackstone Raid 26 will be hosted at Cedar Lakes Conference Center in Ripley hosted by the Barony of Blackstone Mountain from Thursday April 27th starting at 5pm to Sunday April 30th till noon.  It is a the largest Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) event in WV.  They will have marshal activities (combat), Arts & Sciences, a Merchants Row, bards, and just general hanging out with people and sharing interests.

For combat they will have open field on Thursday.  Friday night will be AE500 and Torch Light Tourney.  Saturday’s Battlefield schedule includes a Gage Meet-n-Beat, Field Battles with Combat Archery, Bridge Battles, Bannered Gates, and a Scholars tournament for fencing.

Arts & Sciences will be held in the Crafthouse beside the Merchant’s Area.  The annual A&S competition will be on Saturday 10am to 4pm.  All entries are welcome. Judging will be done by populous vote.  They will have classes on Saturday about various ways people were punished, poisoners, and calligraphy.

Merchants will have various items for sell; wood stuffs, leather works, food, armory, jewelry, clothes, pottery, and more items. 

Paladin’s Pantry Food Drive will be collecting unopened foodstuffs or non-alcoholic beverages you bring to drop off or have left over from the event at the Main Lodge and taking them to local food banks.  They will also be collecting tents, sleeping bags, cots, rain gear, and the like for the homeless and victims of disasters.

Registration on site is $25 for SCA members and $30 for non-members.  Children 7 to 17 are $10 and those younger are free.  There is still bunk space available.  Camping is free.  A hotel is also on site.

Sicilian’s Revenge 2016: Palio di Sicily

The Shire of Port Oasis of the Kingdom of AEthelmearc of the Society of Anachronism (SCA) is hosting Sicilian’s Revenge Palio di Sicily next Friday September 9th to Sunday September 11th at Camp Mad Anthony Wayne Lodge in Huntington.

The Shire of Port Oasis is excited to host the games of the Palio di Sicily. The rival Contrade of Port Oasis are each out to prove their superiority. In order to prevent these rivalries from becoming outright warfare we have, in the fashion of the Italians, declared a Palio Event comprising of several challenges from which a winning Contrada shall be determined and be awarded the Palio prize. Come horse around with us, join in the games and delightful festivities that shall ensue. But beware! The Sicilian is still out for revenge, so keep a close eye on your horses!

Palio activities include armored combat scenarios include “mounted” combat, a modified bearpit tournament, and flotilla battles; two archery competition, fencing with  a torchlight tourney on Friday, children’s activities, card games, bardic circle, assassination games, prize for best Italian garb, and more.

Everyone is invited to display their Arts & Science projects for competition on Saturday from 10am to 2:30pm, no documentation required.  The winners will be determined by popular vote.  There will also be drawing materials for people to try and learn about renaissance drawing methods, materials, and techniques.

There will be a lunch buffet on Saturday and an evening feast for fifty.  There will also be merchants set up selling wares.

Site Troll will be open 6pm till 11pm on Friday and 8am to 4pm on Saturday.  Adult registration at site is $26 for SCA members and $21 for non-members.  Children 6-15 are $20, $15 for members.  Kids 5 and under get in free.  On-site camping is available.

Tsubasacon 2015

Tsubasacon is a three-day anime, cosplay, and gaming con at the Big Sandy Area and Riverfront Conference Center in Huntington on Friday October 8th to Sunday October 10th.

Voice actor guests for this year are  Kyle Hebert (DBZ, Bleach, Naruto), Keith Silverstein (Gundam Unicorn, Monster, Sailor Moon), and Matthew Erickson (Crest/Banner of the Stars, Zoids, Gundam SEED Destiny).  Other guests are Japanese rock band Kazha, anime anthropologist Charles Dunbar, Carolina Manga Library, panelist group Vitamin H Productions, Japanese arcade machine owners Tokyo Attack,  boffer fighters Sleeping Samurai, and game show host Greggo.

Events at the con include their usual activities plus some new ones.  The cosplay masquerade will be on Saturday.  There will also be an In-Character Contest on Friday and Cosplay Lip Sync contest on Saturday (18+ version on Friday night).  Panels from guests and attendees, Greggo’s game shows, two viewing rooms, autographs, concerts, formal ball on Friday and dance party on Saturday, martial arts demo, artist alley and vendor room to check out, manga library, photo shoots, AMV contest and more.

Video Gaming this year will be run by Rare Drops.  They will hold tournaments throughout the weekend on J Stars Victory, Mortal Kombat X, SSFighter 4 Ultra, Smash Bros Melee and 4, Injustice, Mario Kart Double Dash and 8, Naruto 2, Halo 2, Call of Duty, and Project M.  They will also have high score challenges on Donkey Kong, Super Mario Maker, and Tetris over the weekend.  You can pre-reg for the tournaments now.  Tokyo Attack will have 13 different arcade cabinets for free play and will be holding a DDR tournament on Saturday.  There is also the Tsu Region Pokémon League to play in.

Tsubasacon is holding a whole new table top gaming area as well.  The Huntington Unplugged Gaming Society will have a library of board games to check out.  Dungeon Dwellers will be teaching and holding tournaments on Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh.  RPGs from Pathfinder Society and Sparks, Warmachine and Hordes demo, and open gaming area.

Pre-reg goes until October 8th and is $45 for the weekend.  At door prices are $45 for weekend, $30 for Friday, $40 for Saturday and Sunday, $20 for Sunday, and free for kids under 7.  On Saturday they will also have a $25 Gaming Badge that will let you into the gaming area, but only that.  The con is also collecting goods for the Ronald McDonald House.

Blackstone Raid XXIV

Society of Creative Anachronism kingdom Barony of Blackstone Mountain will be hosting Blackstone Raid XXIV this year from Thursday April 2nd through Sunday April 26th at Cedar Lakes in Ripley.

There will be displays of work from artisans and craftspeople.  There will be a general Arts & Science competition and a winner to be chosen by populous vote.  One Friday there will be a Tournament of the Masters for fencing, along with open field for pick-ups and workshops on Saturday.  Thrown Weapons and Archery range will be open.  A Royalty Travel Fundraiser, to fund the travel of SCA royalty to events, where you can buy $1 arrows to shoot at targets representing different peerages that will then be matched by said royal.  Heavy Weapons events include Viking Insult, Grand Melee, 500 tournament, Order of the Gage Meet and Beat, and more.

Merchants selling at the event will have such things as leather works, jewelry, books, tankards, armor, handmade soap, and plenty more for the medieval enthusiast.  Onsite food will be handled by Delights of Cathay.

Pre-registration is $18, those between 7 and 17 it is $9, and kids under six free.  On site is $20, $10 for those 7 to 17, and still free for kids under six.  A family of two adults and two minors can pre-reg for $54 or on site for $60.  A day trip, starting at noon on Saturday, is $10 for adults and $5 for those 7 to 17. A surcharge for non-SCA members will apply.

Camping on site is free or you can stay at the Cedar Lakes hotel.  All cabins have been sold out already.

I was here last year for a day and found everyone to be really nice and willing to help out.  Plus there were plenty of parties, sessions, and groups to found and join at night.

Sicilian’s Revenge

The Shire of Port Oasis, of the Kingdom of AEthelearc of the Society of Creative Anachronism, is holding Sicilian’s Revenge on November 14th through the 16th at Camp Mad Anthony Wayne in Huntington.   The site opens on Friday at 4pm and closes Sunday at 10am.

Sign up for Heavy Weapons, Archery, and Fencing on Saturday from 10am to 11am.  They are holding a Shakespearean Dinner Tournament, you will engage in combat while tied to your seats to determine who pays for dinner.  For fencing there will be Daggers at Dawn (quick draw element), Cloak and Dagger, Stilettos at Sunset (by lanterns), and informal duels.

The Arts & Science Display and Competition categories are Decorative, Useful, Wearable and Tasty.  Voting will be done by populous vote.  You can also display without being part of the judging.

There will a light breakfast, lunch, and Italian pasta fest for dinner served on Saturday morning.  Merchants will also be selling custom-made brick over pizzas throughout the day.  The feast will be at 6pm on Saturday.  The fest is limited to 60 people.

There is a lodge with 28 bunks which are available as first come, first served basis.  There is space for tent camping and four primitive cabins on site, electricity but no heat.  Contact Mistress Anne Greye about getting a cabin.  Several hotels are in the area as well.

Site fees are $10 for adults, $4 for children between 6 to 17, and free for children 5 and under.  Non-members will be charged a $5 surcharge.  Feast fees are $7.50 for adults, $4 for children 6 and over, and free for children 5 and under.  Your reservation clerk is Carrie Uihlein Nilles.

Siege of Glengary XIX

Shire of Sylvan Glen of the Society for Creative Anachronism, is hosting Siege of Glengary XIX on Friday September 26 at 4pm through Sunday September 28 at noon at the Jefferson County WV Fairgrounds in Kearneysville in the eastern panhandle.

Our adversaries to the south and to the north have become restless and threaten to invade our borders on a quest for the coveted Sylver Apple Bucket. We must amass our brave soldiers of sword and shield, our masters of dagger, draw and parry, our loosers of arrow, our throwers of ax as well as our wielders of pen, brush and needle to lay waste to this trespass into our fair kingdom.

This year they are adding a Queens Rapier Championship to be held on Saturday September 27.  Other events will include a Siege Points Competition for the Sylver Apple in various armed and gentle arts; heavy, rapier, thrown, archery, atl atl, and A&S.  It will also be home to the InterKindgom Equestrian Worshop.  Other activities separate and part of the Siege Points are a Torchlight Tandem Tourney on Friday night, four bridge battles, four field battles, pick up fighting, fencing scenarios, novelty shoot, GLENO (like bingo but with arrow), Glow Throw tournament, a novelty throw, arts & science competition, siege engines, and more.

The Traveler’s Repast will be on Friday evening for $12.  Breakfast and Saturday Dayboard are included with site fee.

Site fees for adults for the whole weekend are $14.  An additional $5 fee for non-members.  This is a camping event with no additional fee for camping.  Everyone will need to sign an Equestrian Waiver since there will be horses around.  No fee for those 17 and under.

The Shire of Sylvan Glen is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA.org) located in the panhandle of West Virginia. The SCA is a group of people who are interested in researching and recreating aspects of pre-17th century Europe. Things such as various arts and crafts, activities and even simulating the martial combat of the period.

The Donnan Party: A Day of Beatings

The Donnan Party is an event held by The Shire of Ballachlagan of The Kingdom of the AEthelearc of The Society for Creative Anachronism.  The event will be on March 29 at the Warwood School in Wheeling going from 10am until site closing at 6pm.

For the first time a royal progress will be at the event with Majesties Timothy and Gabrielle, the prince and princess of AEthelearc attending.  The autocrats for the event are Ælric Ravenshaw and Lord Garreth Whytbull.

Events for the day include fencing, heavy weapon tournament, novelty archery shoots, thrown weapons range, Arts and Science display for trophies, Troll runs from 10am till noon.  Several merchants will be at the event selling different things, mostly looks like different types of outfits and accessories.  The main event looks like a hunting/fencing event called Wudewasa Crossing Tourney.  If I knew more about the SCA I might be able to describe it better.

Event cost is $18 for thos 18 and over, $4 for those between 6 to 17, and kids under 5 get in free.  A surcharge of $5 will be added to non-members. Lunch will be an extra $2.  Reservations can be made by e-mailing Lord Ælric.
