WV Pop Con 2016

WV Pop Con is back this Saturday August 27 from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 28th from 11am to 5pm at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

Featured creator guests at the show are Dominike “Domo” Stanton (Starbrand and Nightmask, character illustrator for Archer), Chad Cicconi (sketch card artist), Steve Geiger (former managing art director of Marvel), Justin Jordan (Shadowman, Call of Duty Zombies), Bill McKay (Zombie Tramp, Vampblade), Rafter Roberts (Archer and Armstrong, Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, The God Child), and Shawn Gabborin (found member and editor in chief of Action Lab Entertainment).

There will be plenty of other exhibitors there: illustrators, writers, comic creators, nerdy crafters, an all girl robotics team, game creators, painters, Electro-Magnetic Press and other small publishers, sculptors, photographers, cosplayers, podcasters, tattoo artists, Ghostbusters, filmmakers, Rebel Legion, College Football Hall of Famer Major Harris, Amtgard, pro wrestler Ricky Morton, 501st, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Black Mountain Guard, Pathfinder Society, and more.

Not to mention vendors selling comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, gaming supplies, t-shirts, collectables, toys, plush, books, video games, crafts, buttons, leather work, weapons, posters, and plenty more.

They will have a kid’s cosplay contest on Saturday and an adult one on Sunday, various panels, games of Pathfinder, Magic: The Gathering tournament, other gaming demos, gaming library, and retro video games.

Admission at the door will be $20 for both days.  They will also have exclusive covers for sell for Generation Zero and two different Prince-S STARthief done by guests for sell at the show.

A comic show with a lot of variety for fans of all kinds of genres.

JediCon XIV

The 14th annual JediCon WV is this Saturday June 18th from 10am to 4pm at the New Martinsville United Methodist Church in New Martinsville.

There will be door prizes, a silent auction for the Children’s Miracle Network, costuming groups, a caricaturist and several guest speakers.  The speakers include Bill McBride the holder of the Guinness Book of World Records title for Darth Vader collection, Guerra Estelar author of a book on Star Wars in Argentina, Kevin Lentz founder of the Kentucky Star Wars Collecting Club, and Kim Simmons the photographer for Kenner used on vintage Star Wars toys.  Costuming groups like the 501st and Rebel Legion.  The Ourter Rim Praxeum Lightsaber School of Fairmont will attending and giving a presentation of the seven traditional lightsaber forms.

Plus several vendor selling Star Stars action figures and merchandise plus some artists like Scott DM Simmions.  A Special limited edition copies of Guerra Estelar created exclusively for the show will be for sell.  A food court will be run by Christy’s Cakes and Catering.

Admissions is just a dollar with kids five and under getting in free.

For Star Wars fans and collectors, this is a show to check out and help raise some money for charity.

JCPL Annual Mini-Con

Jackson County Public Library is having their second annual Mini-Con this Saturday May 21st from 10am to 5pm at the main library in Ripley.

Some of the things they will be doing at the event are a craft and Lego maker space plus writing and art contests.  They will have a costume contest with winners in four different age groups.  There will be appearances from cosplay model Harley Heartthrob, the 501st, Black Mountain Guard, and the Rebel Legion.  There will be a Smash Brothers mini-tourney, Pathfinder RPG, D&D minis, Magic: The Gathering tournaments, and other games to play.  Plus vendors selling comics, toys, table top and video games, and more.

Looks like a quick little fun event for anyone who can make it up to hang out, meet people, and have fun.

Mini-Con is primarily a literacy outreach geared to encourage and foster a life long love of reading through the use of comics, gaming and other out of the box methodologies. It is an event to engage the local community and encourage the use of the library and all of its resources by tapping into the creative spirit of all individuals and providing a safe place for them to be embraced, to learn, and to grow.

 

WV Pop Con 2015

WV Pop Con returns to Mylan Park in Morgantown this Saturday August 22nd from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 23rd from 11m to 5pm.

Creator guests include comic creators, artists, authors, crafters, design studios, costumers, and more.  Featured guests are Mike McKone (Avengers Academy, Justice League United), Thomas Zahler (Love and Capes, My Little Pony), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, God Child), Chad Cicconi (sketch cards, NFL Rush Zone), Bill McKay (Zombies vs Cheerleaders, Danger Zone), and Dennis Budd (sketch card artist) .  Some of WV’s finest who will be there include featured guest James Patrick (Green Arrow, Pulp 21) and Robert Tinnell (Feast of the Seven Fishes, Wicked West); Jason Pell (Zombie Highway, Season’s End), Rich Bottles Jr. (Hellhole West Virginia, Lumberjacked),  Larry Morgan (Electro-Magnetic Press), Grinning Fox Customs, Dustin Smith (Knight Hunter), David Newbold (Runaways, Weapon X), Dusty Catlett, Implexity Designs, Angi D*signs, Garrick Gilmore, Josh Floquet, Andrew Carter (Let’s Play All The Games, Habitat Against Humanity) and others.

Entertainment guests are the 501st Legion Garrison Carida Squad Corellia, The Portrait Dude, Rebel Legion, Amtgard, Mandalorian Mercs The Black Mountain Guard, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Wudang Swordsmen Academy, Sigler Photography’s Morbid Memories, World Paranormal Investigations, Vintage Theatre Company, WV Ghostbusters and their van, Jeremy Ambler (Walking Dead, the Crazies), game company Milton Roe Creative and cosplayers Knightmage, Bio Cosplay, and Bunny Bombshell. They will have vendors selling comics, games, action figures, TPBs, cards, collectibles, video games, figures, costumes, props, t-shirts, leather goods, weapons, and who knows what all else.  Plus publishers Outpouring Comics, Burning Bulb Publishing, Electro-Magnetic Press, and Action Lab Comics.

Gaming will include Magic tournaments hosted by Nerducopia, West Virginia Pathfinder Society, a table top and retro gaming libraries and demos.  The costume contest is Sunday at 3pm.  Sign-up at the Illusive Skull booth at the con.

Admission is $10 for each day or $18 for two days.  Children under 10 get in free with an adult.   You can purchase before hand online or at Comic Paradise Plus in Fairmont or Westover.

JediCon WV Episode 12

JediCon WV XII is this Saturday June 20th at the Matthew Barker Memorial Complex in Paden City from 10am-4pm.

There will be door prizes, a silent auction, guest speakers, vendors with both old and new Star Wars toys and collectibles, Kim Simmons, a food court, video games, and members of the 501st, Rebel Legion, and Mandalorian Mercs about in full regalia.

Panels and panelist for this year are John Booth author of Collect All 21, Kevin Daniel Lentz founding member and regional director of the Kentucky Star Wars Collectors Club speaking about collecting Star Wars Read-a-Long Records and Tapes, and Steven Weimer on various bootleg Star War figures from around the world.

There will also be a showing of the award-winning independent film Mining Moon, which captures the flavor of MMO Star Wars the Old Republic.

Admission is just $1 for everyone six years old and up.  It is free for those five and under.  All ticket, food, and silent auction sales goes to the Children’s Miracle Network to benefit the WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown.

So if you are a Star Wars fan, collector, costumer, or whatever; this is where to go to meet your people.

Rising Star 23

West Virginia’s oldest convention, Rising Star, returns for another year.  October Friday 24th and Saturday 25th at the Bluefield State College (BSC) in Bluefield.  This will be Rising Star 23 and the theme for the year is Kaiju and celebrating the birthday of Godzilla.

Guests at the con are Beck Seashols (art of cute and LucasArts artist), R.S. Rob Belcher (author of Six gun Tarot), Chris DeHart (zombie make-up artist and props), Ashley Holohan (anthropomorphic artist), Kim Headlee (author of Dawnflight), Nicholas Anderson (blogger of WV Fandoms Blog), K.R. Thompson (author of The Keeper Saga), Andrew and Tiffany Ragland (FASA Corporation Game Reps), S. C. Houff (author of Spring Blessings: From the Files of the Department of the Arcane), Laura Lin (local paranormal author), Dan Delby (comic book author), Consortium 499 (filmmaker and alternate soundtracks), Paul Delinger (author of Dr. Lazarus & Other Stories), White Plectrum (filker and comedy), Studio Unseen (webcomic creators), plus Mark and Amanda Davis (local artists).

Groups attending include Strange Aeons (LARP), Pure Steam (steampunk gaming), Black Diamond Paranormal Society, Abingdon Historical Combat (renaissance-era combat instructors, BSC Robotics (award-winning robotics team), and the Rebel Legion’s Freedom Base (Star Wars costuming group).

Programming will include game demos, discussion panels, board gaming, anime viewing room, video gaming, dealers and artists, photo ops, costume contest, concert, charity auction, concessions, brony meet up, Werewolf games, workshops, and just generally hanging out with some of the old guard.  I will be running a game show on Saturday, so come check out Geek On to see who the biggest nerd is.  The charity auction on Saturday will raise money to establish the Johnny Miller and David Craig Memorial Scholarships.

A pass is only $5 at the door for both days.  BSC students, faculty, and staff get in free though.
