Power Up 2016

Power Up the Tri-State’s Annual Retro Video Game Convention returns this Saturday August 27th at the conference area at the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington from 10am to 8pm.

The Standard Nerds will be hosting the tournaments again this year.  The tournaments have an entry fee. All entry fees will be given to the Extra Life Charity.

The tournaments will be Smash Bros 64, Smash Bros 4, Rocket League (XBox One), Pokken, and Mario Kart Double Dash.  Check the website for the times and rules for each game.

Hometown Hobbies will be hosting Magic: The Gathering tournaments throughout the day.  Plus free play board games for all to try.

There will also be a Pokémon League for the 3DS.  Sign-up for $5 and then battle the eight gym leaders around the convention floor.  The proceeds will go to Children’s Hospitals and you will also get entry into raffle drawings throughout the day.  Obtain all eight gym badges to challenge the Elite 4 at the Brawl-a-thon in November.

A few panels have been promised along with a cosplay contest.

Expect around twenty vendors and artists selling games, books, collectables, art work, crafts, and more.  There will be exhibits from the D20 Girls, cosplays Santana and Kiss A Frog Cosplay, local cons, video game creators Lasso Games, Mandalorian Mercs, Trenton Jedi, and artists Rusty Shackles and Michael Mayne.

Entry is $5, free for children twelve and under.  Door prizes will be given out through out the day for just attending.

Fans of video games are going to want to check this out for playing, collecting, and generally just hanging out with fellow fans.

 

Classic Plastics Expo 2016

The third annual Classic Plastic Toy and Comic Expo is March 5th at the Parkersburg Art Center in Parkersburg from 10am to 6pm.  The show is put on by Classic Plastics Toy Store which is right down the street from the show.  All proceeds of the show go to the Parkersburg Art Center and local Red Cross Disaster Relief.

The Guest of Honor for the show is Timothy Zahn, Stars Wars Expanded Universe author and New York Times Bestseller.  Featured guests are Jordan Patton from Face-Off who will be promoting his new project Deadnecks and Kim D.M. Simmons, photographer of the original Star Wars figure packaging.  Bands Alien 3000, Betrayed by the Bullett, and Harrah will each be playing an acoustic set.

Costume groups 501st Legion, Causplayers, Ghostbusters WV Division, and Madalorian Mercs Black Mountain Guard will be around for pictures and cosplayer help.  Artist and comic creators who will be at the show are Jason Lewis, 21 Pulp, River City Design, JR Earls, Evan Bevins, Nathan Scott Arnold, author Terry W. Ervin II, Jason Pell, Doomsday Designs, caricaturist J.D. Williamson, and Ren McKinzie.

Vendors and dealers will be a mix of regional stores, personal collectors, and craftsmen selling comics, anime, manga, board games, action figures, models, prop items, steampunk jewelry, video games and systems, Pez, My Little Pony, plush, card games, collectibles, Hot Wheels, banks, handmade accessories, sport cards, books, and so much more.

Others who will be setting up are Remix Pro Wrestling, Jedicon WV, podcast Dueling Ogres, Doctor Who: Classic Series Regenerated, 605 Wrestling, Hades Ladies Roller Derby, Bunny Bombshell, and Hawthron Tarot Card reader.

They will have a cosplay contest and a raffles.  Dueling Ogres will be recording a show there.  Rare Drops will be running their game room with several tournaments like Smash 1v1 and Mario Kart N64.  There will be concessions sold at the show as well.

$5 per person, kids 10 and under get in free.

A show with a bit everything for everyone out there especially toy and comic collectors.  At a low price and a good cause.

Extra Life Con

Extra Life Con is an event to raise money for the WVU Children’s Hospital through the Extra Life Charity starting at 10am on Saturday November 7th and going at least until 1am on Sunday morning at the Capital City Lodge Fraternal Order of Police in Dunbar.

Admission is a minimum donation of $25.  There you can buy tickets for $1 which can be spent to enter tournaments or for the raffle that they will draw at 10pm.  All proceeds will be going to charity.  They have prizes and raffle items donated by local business and supporters of Extra Life to give away.

Pathfinder Society and SPARKS will both be running RPG sessions throughout the day.  There will be a board game library donated by CharCon, a pool table, dart board, poker table, arcade and pinball machines to play.  Chick-fill-A at the Town Center will be providing free lunch.

There will be Ms Pac Man and Galaga High Score tournaments at different times throughout the day.  Other tournaments include Martian Dice, pool, Settlers of Catan, darts, poker, and King of Tokyo.  All tournaments have prizes and you can sign up any time up to 10 minutes of start time.    They will do a Wits & Wagers Game Show at 7pm.  At around 10pm they will start-up large group gaming like Werewolf, Resistance, and others.

They have already raised nearly half of their target goal for this event.  You can sign up ahead of time or if you can not make it yourself still donate to help out some sick kids.

Gamers of all type should be able to find something fun to here.  Of course if you can not make, please consider making a donation to help out a sick kid.

 

Power Up 2015

Power Up is a retro video game convention started by Ben Durfee (artist and co-owner of Rare Drops) last year and it returns this year to the River Side Conference Center of the Big Sandy Superstore Arena on Saturday August 29th from 10am to 8pm in Huntington.

The Standard Nerds and Brawl-a-thon will be running the tournaments for this year.  All tournaments will be $5 to enter with a cap of 32 players. All proceeds will be going to the Extra Life Charity (Cincinnati Children’s Hospital).

The tournaments are Super Smash Bros Melee at 1pm, Amiibo at 3pm, and Mario Kart Double Dash on the Game Cube at 4pm.

They will have several systems and arcade machines set on free play for all to play.

There will also be panels this year from Bunny Bombshell on cosplay, Manual Fox on Youtube/Twitch streaming, one on game cleaning and repair, D20 Girls Project doing one on girls and gaming, and Lasso Games will be demoing their new game Laventera and the game creation process.  At 6pm the D20 will be running a costume contest.

There will be lots of exhibitors selling various video games, video systems, video game peripherals, collectibles, books, art prints, pixel art, crafts, jewelry, bake goods, and more.  Several will be willing to buy or trade any games you might have to get rid of.

Admission is only $5, pay at door only, and free for kids 12 and under.

WV Pop Con 2015

WV Pop Con returns to Mylan Park in Morgantown this Saturday August 22nd from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 23rd from 11m to 5pm.

Creator guests include comic creators, artists, authors, crafters, design studios, costumers, and more.  Featured guests are Mike McKone (Avengers Academy, Justice League United), Thomas Zahler (Love and Capes, My Little Pony), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, God Child), Chad Cicconi (sketch cards, NFL Rush Zone), Bill McKay (Zombies vs Cheerleaders, Danger Zone), and Dennis Budd (sketch card artist) .  Some of WV’s finest who will be there include featured guest James Patrick (Green Arrow, Pulp 21) and Robert Tinnell (Feast of the Seven Fishes, Wicked West); Jason Pell (Zombie Highway, Season’s End), Rich Bottles Jr. (Hellhole West Virginia, Lumberjacked),  Larry Morgan (Electro-Magnetic Press), Grinning Fox Customs, Dustin Smith (Knight Hunter), David Newbold (Runaways, Weapon X), Dusty Catlett, Implexity Designs, Angi D*signs, Garrick Gilmore, Josh Floquet, Andrew Carter (Let’s Play All The Games, Habitat Against Humanity) and others.

Gaming will include Magic tournaments hosted by Nerducopia, West Virginia Pathfinder Society, a table top and retro gaming libraries and demos.  The costume contest is Sunday at 3pm.  Sign-up at the Illusive Skull booth at the con.

Admission is $10 for each day or $18 for two days.  Children under 10 get in free with an adult.   You can purchase before hand online or at Comic Paradise Plus in Fairmont or Westover.

Nerdy Movies from Fathom

Fathom Events has a lot of movies and events coming up in the next few months.  Here is a listing of some to take a look at.  You will have to check for what theaters near yourself who might be doing any showings.

On Thursday July 16th at 7:30pm RiffTrax presents the re-broadcast of their live riffing of Sharknado 2: The Second One.  Another chance to see this bizarre shark weather movie get the skewing it deserves.

On Tuesday July 21st at 8:30pm watch a special on the world of pro-gaming, All Work All Play: The Pursuit of eSports Glory.  There will be a rebroadcast on Thursday July 30th at 7:30pm.

It features a panel discussion with some gaming legends and a StarCraft II battle.

On Tuesday August 4th and Wednesday August 5th at 7:30pm watch the latest Dragon Ball Z movie Resurrection ‘F’.  There will be repeats on August 8th and 11th as well.

This movie, supervised by Akira Toriyama himself, is a sequel to last year’s Battle of Gods and features the return of Frieza.

The Annie Award winner is described as E.T. with a giant robot stars Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr, and Vin Diesel as the giant robot.

RifTrax returns Thursday October 1st at 8pm, and Tuesday October 6th at 7:30pm, with Miami Connection.  A movie so 80s no human words can describe it.  Though it does feature motorcycle-riding ninjas versus a rock band.

And finally for this update, a double showing of Dracula on Sunday October 25 at 2pm and 7pm and Wednesday October 28th at 2pm and 7pm presented by TCM.  Watch the classic 1931 vampire film Dracula with Bela Lugosi and then watch the Spanish version shot at the same time at night with a different cast.

Over the Border: Wyvacon 2015

Wyvacon returns on Saturday July 25th at the Wytheville Meeting Center in Wytheville, Virginia from 9am to 11pm

Guest include Mark MacDicken family entertainer as Flabbergast the Wizard; filker Keith Bringer of White Plectrum; writer of many genres Travis I. Siart; rock band/comic creator Metalcult Comix; and writer Kim Headlee.  Plus groups the Starfleet International chapter the USS Angstrom; paranormal investigation groups Sisters of Salem, Black Diamond Paranormal Society, Red Moon Paranormal Society, and radio show Paranormal Party; the 501st Legion, the Bluefield State Robotics, and Pure Steam RPG.

 

They will be having a Nerdy Book Exchange, costume contest hosted by Flabbergast the Wizard with three age categories for both male and female, a silent art auction, magic show by Flabbergast, paranormal investigation round table, sumobot competition, brony and pegasister meetup, and Paranormal Party live recording.  Panels on Jack Kirby, strange history, comic creation, steampunk on a budget, the 501st and USS Angstrom.  Workshops on writing and publishing, latex application and sculpting, filk writing, and Nerf Modding.  There will also be a charity raffle and the 501st Legion will be doing a fundraiser of their own for the Wytheville Community College Scholarship Foundation,

Gaming will consist of Star Trek Attack Wing, War Machine, Pure Steam, Dungeon Crawl Classics demos; Pokémon card and video gaming tournament, Magic the Gathering and Warhammer 40k  tournament; Blaz Blue, Super Smach Bros, and Mortal Kombat X tournaments.  There will be a miniatures painting competition for Warhammer and open gaming as well.

Attending vendors will be selling comics, CCGs and other games, figurines, handmade jewelry, 8bit style accessories, model kits, paintings on glass, cosplay props, weapons, steampunk items, art prints, bookmarks, toys, and lots more.

Admission is $5 for everyone over five and free for kids under five.  Snacks will be available for purchase on site.

A fun event for all nerds who can make it.
