Over the Border: Khan-Con

Khan-Con the sci-fi and superhero convention will be this Saturday August 13th and Sunday 14th at the Woodlawn Intermediate School in Woodlawn, Virginia from 10am to 4pm.  The event is family friendly fundraiser for Jack Sullivan, a little boy dealing with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Guest at the con are Michael Eury editor-in-chief of the Eisner Award nominated Back Issue Magazine who has also worked as a writer and editor for several comic companies, the R2-D2 Builders Club, the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, Brian Funk creator of the crime noir/fantasy comic Enforcer, heavy metal band and comic creator Dionysis Metacult, g.paul.r creator of Sgt. Sasquatch: The Bigfoot of Liberty and other comics, writer and comic creator Dan Delby, small publisher Dreampunk Press, sci-fi author Arylias Nova, co-authors Casey Eanes and Seth Ervin, plus artists Keith Kapish, Kev Lyerly, Garrett Faith, Kela Hunt, and Matari Bain.

Vendors will have comics, gaming supplies, steampunk and vintage inspired jewelry, toys, collectibles, pixel art, buttons, nerdy crafts, clocks, dolls, and plenty more for fans to check out.

There will be a cosplay contest, R2-D2 builders demonstration, the and a Super Smash Bros tournament. Nothing else mentioned about panels or events, but I am sure you will be able to find some people to chat with about plenty of different topics.

Admission is only $5 for adults and free for children twelve and under.  They do promise there will be air conditioning in the building, which trust me s a big deal.

Another small community convention for a good cause to head out and check on.

Over the Border: Wyvacon 2015

Wyvacon returns on Saturday July 25th at the Wytheville Meeting Center in Wytheville, Virginia from 9am to 11pm

Guest include Mark MacDicken family entertainer as Flabbergast the Wizard; filker Keith Bringer of White Plectrum; writer of many genres Travis I. Siart; rock band/comic creator Metalcult Comix; and writer Kim Headlee.  Plus groups the Starfleet International chapter the USS Angstrom; paranormal investigation groups Sisters of Salem, Black Diamond Paranormal Society, Red Moon Paranormal Society, and radio show Paranormal Party; the 501st Legion, the Bluefield State Robotics, and Pure Steam RPG.

 

They will be having a Nerdy Book Exchange, costume contest hosted by Flabbergast the Wizard with three age categories for both male and female, a silent art auction, magic show by Flabbergast, paranormal investigation round table, sumobot competition, brony and pegasister meetup, and Paranormal Party live recording.  Panels on Jack Kirby, strange history, comic creation, steampunk on a budget, the 501st and USS Angstrom.  Workshops on writing and publishing, latex application and sculpting, filk writing, and Nerf Modding.  There will also be a charity raffle and the 501st Legion will be doing a fundraiser of their own for the Wytheville Community College Scholarship Foundation,

Gaming will consist of Star Trek Attack Wing, War Machine, Pure Steam, Dungeon Crawl Classics demos; Pokémon card and video gaming tournament, Magic the Gathering and Warhammer 40k  tournament; Blaz Blue, Super Smach Bros, and Mortal Kombat X tournaments.  There will be a miniatures painting competition for Warhammer and open gaming as well.

Attending vendors will be selling comics, CCGs and other games, figurines, handmade jewelry, 8bit style accessories, model kits, paintings on glass, cosplay props, weapons, steampunk items, art prints, bookmarks, toys, and lots more.

Admission is $5 for everyone over five and free for kids under five.  Snacks will be available for purchase on site.

A fun event for all nerds who can make it.

Over the Border: Wyvacon2014

Wyvacon is a small sci-fi con in Wytheville, VA holding their third event this year.  It will be at the Wytheville Meeting Center on Saturday July 26th from 9am-5pm.  Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.  There will be food and drink sold by the meeting center, no outside food allowed.

Special guest for the convention are paranormal investigation groups Sisters of Salem and Black Diamond Paranormal, author and screenwriters Barry Hayes and Jeremy Hicks, FX makeup and costumers Chris DeHart I.R. Zombi, green screen photographers Sci-Fi Photo Guys, Transformer costumer John Koger, Arthurian novelist Kim Headlee, amateur astronomer Scott Martin, artist Hershel A. Brewer, all-round nerd and tinkerer Drew Laing, the 501st, filker White Plectrum, geek metal band Cult Dionysis, and comic creator Dan Delby.

Some of the events at the con are 501st will be holding a charity raffle with prizes from local artists, vendors, and businesses, a book exchange where you can trade up to three sci-fi or fantasy books for three others, silent art auction, and costume contest at 12:30pm with three different age categories and one for pair or group.  There will panels on comic book illustrations, brony meet-up, paranormal investigations, gamer creation, Japanese comics, filking, space & science, plus demonstrations on latex, 3-D printing, steampunk weapon making, and miniatures painting.

Gaming at the event includes console gaming  provided by Game Stop with BlazeBlue, Streetfighter, Injustice, and Dark Souls 2.  For table top gaming there is Warhammer 40k tournament, Magic: the Gathering sealed deck tournament, Star Wars X-Wing miniatures demos, and Pathfinder Pure Steam and Imperium Campaign games.

Vendors will be selling books, buttons, patches, walking sticks, steampunk jewelry, art prints, art cards, crafts, t-shirts, comics, steampunk weapons, collectibles, leather work, RPGs, models, miniatures, CCGs, and plenty more.

There will be an after con party at the Wohlfahrt Haus Matterhorn Lounge and Bier Garten.

A small friendly con with lots of excitement.

Over the Border: WyvaCon

WyvaCon is a small knit sci-fi/horror/gaming convention in Wytheville, VA.  They started just last year and for their second event they will be on Saturday July 27th from 9am-5pm at the Wytheville Meeting Center.

The 501st Legion will be in attendance helping to raise money for a new Death Sta…. I mean St. Jude Children’s Hospital through photo ops and hourly raffle drawings.  Raffle tickets are $1.  Abingdon Historical Combat a medieval martial arts recreationists will be doing combat demos in costume.  Other guests for the con include authors CJ Henderson (over 75 books/novels plus short stories and comics) and Kim Headlee (with her own Arthurian series), comic creator Dan Delby, and Ravenloft (White Wolf) artist Jamie Ryan Powers.

Event wise the con’s costume contests will starts at Noon with prizes for the best male and female costumes for both adults and kids.  A silent art auction starts at 9am and ends at 2pm.  Plus a Nerdy Book Exchange, to change out up to three sci-fi/fantasy works you no longer want for new ones, goes from 9am to 4pm.
Gaming at the con includes a Warhammer 40K Tournament 9am, two Appalachian Steampunk Pathfinder RPG demos by Pure Steam will be held, and a Magic: The Gathering sealed deck tournament by Video Game Exchange of Wytheville.  Game Stop of Wytheville is sponsoring tournaments for Persona Arena 4 on Playstation and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Admission is only $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 10 and under.  Food and drinks will be sold at the event too.  If you are interested in being a vendor, spaces are $15 and get you a table, chair, and badge to sell your wares.

Over the Boarder: Madicon

Madicon is a yearly gaming/literary convention run by the Science Fiction Fantasy Guild at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.  This year it is at the student center at JMU, March 8-10.  The con has a number of panels, workshops, vendors, artists, many games, costume contest, a LARP, art show, video games, concerts, rave, live bird show, and auctions (including the Geek Auction to buy live people) to raise money for the Wildlife Center of Virginia.

Guests for the con are authors: Jana Oliver, Jean Marie Ward, Pip Ballantine, R.S. Belcher, and Tee Morris, plus music GOH Johan Knight, chiptune makers Cartoon Bomb, Datacats, and Inverse Phase, makeup guest Megan Amberly, voice actor Jon St. John, the 501st Storm Troopers, DJs DJ Cutman and DJ Super Sonic, combat groups Bridgewater College Comitatus, COMARR, and Silverdain.

Just wanted to put this up cause I have been to the con and it is really fun.  Very small but that is what makes it so great.

Over the Border: Mysticon

Very late in doing this but I still wanted to post it.

MystiCon is a literary sci-fi con (plus fantasy, pop culture, steampunk, and more) February 22-24 at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn in Roanoke, Virginia.

The Guests of Honor include Peter Davison (5th Doctor Who), Larry Elmore (D&D artist), Orson Scott Card (author of Ender’s Game), Tom Angleberger (author of Origami Yoda), Steven Long (RPG creator), musicians, filmmakers, podcasters, authors, artists, costumers, wrestlers, and more. Plus a some from here in West Virginia.

Artist Mark Davis: co-founder of the Fair Theater Company, Executive Director of the Bluefield Area Arts Center, lecturer at Bluefield State College, judge for the 2005 Ennies presented at GenCon.  He should be around with some of his work to check out.

Graphic Designer Emily Mottesheard: creator of “Cookies and Cream” webcomic, Mystik Waboose t-shirt designer, design work for John Ringo merchandise, coloring book creator, design head for IMAGYRO magazine.  You will be able to find her at IMAGRYRO’s table int he vendors room and at panels talking about her hatred of Comic Sans font.

Game Designer Charles Matheny: designer of his own RPG, a tactical combat space game, and writing a novel.  He will be running his RPG, War Among the Stars, several times throughout the weekend.
