The first Mountaineer Comic-Con is this Friday September 24th through Sunday the 26th at the Mylan Park in Morgantown.

Guests are Michael Rosenbaum, John Glover, and Sam Jones III of Smallville, Emily Swallow from the Mandalorian, Alan Ritchson from Titans, Noah Hathaway from The Neverending Story; Ross Marquand, Nadia Hilker, and Matt Lintz from Walking Dead; John Wesley Shipp from Flash, Samantha Newark from Gem and the Holograms, Linsay Rousseau from Transformers: War for Cybertron, Sam Jones of Flash Gordon, a host of Power Rangers like Ciara Hanna, Christina Masterson, Mike O’Laskey, William Shewfelt, Blake Foster, Brennan Mejia, Dwayne Cameron, Abraham Rodriguez, Liana Ramirez, Rorrie Travis, Jazz Baduwalia, and Kristina Ho; plus others to check out, get autographs and/or proffesional photo-ops.

They will have exhibitors include comic and game stores, art studios, toy and collectibles sellers, libaries, food vendors, video game dealers, artists and authors, Sick Tattoo Company, crafters and various others selling and promoting. Cosplay groups that will be there are 501st Garrison Corellia, Amancane Base, Black Mountain Guard, and Outer Rim Praxeum Light Sabers plus a Batmobile and Jurrasic World Jeep.

Tickets will be Friday and Sunday $25, Saturday $35, and free passes for children 10 and under with paid adult. Weekend tickets are not sold at the door.

Classic Plastics Pop Culture Vendor Show is Saturday from 10am to 4pm at the Grand Central Mall in Vienna brought to you by the Classic Plastics Toy Store.

They will have Sergeant Slaughter of wrestling and GI Joe fame selling autographs and photo ops from noon to 4pm. Slaughter is sponsored by The Nerd Close and The Asylum. Who will both be there selling toys and collectibles.

Other vendors include authors Joshua Smith and Terry Ervin, caricatures with JD Williamson, artist Russ Casseday, stores A Walk in Time and 3rd Floor Comics, WV Star Wars Collectors Club, individual collectors with comics, art, action figures, Pops, vintage toys, Barbies, wrestling figures, video game systems and games; plus crafters of lanyards, perlers, crocheted items, plush and more.

They will have a raffle for a gift basket, free to play game systems inside Classic Plastics and more for just 50 cents a play plus a free to play area of blocks, ping pong, and more games.

The event is open the public.

Free Comic Book Day, Ghost Hunts, and Card Shows

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is back with it’s 20th year with over 50 comics to check out. They cover all kinds of genres and styles; something for everyone.

Check to see if your local comic shop is participating and if they are doing anything extra fun for the day.

Haunted Beckley is doing a Ghost Tour and Investigation on their historic Rail Trail Friday the 13th. Hear stories and vist spots for investigations for $15. The walk starts at Mural Park on Third Avenue at 7:30pm.

Haymond House in Sutton is also doing a Ghost Hunt on Friday by Ghost Hunt USA. The event is for a limited number of guests so everyone has more time with the equipment to search and investigate. It starts at 8:30pm and goes to 4am.

The House will also have regular tours 3pm-7:30pm and flashlight tours 8:30pm to midnight Friday and Saturday.

RetroReset Video Games & Collectibles are back with another show. This time it is a Pokemon & Sports Card Show Saturday starting at 11am in Oak Hill. This one is expected to be their biggest yet with people selling all kinds of sport, Pokemon, and other TCG cards. The event is free to attend or $10 to sell.

There is also a Morgantown Mall Show for card this weekend from Friday and Saturday 10am-9pm and Sunday noon to 6pm. Twenty tables of dealers with vintage, new, wax, memorablia, and more. You can usally find comics, fandom cards, and other things at these show, so that’s why I am listing it.

8th Annual WV Pop Con

The 8th Annual West Virginia Popular Culture & Comic Book Convention (WVPopCon) is this Saturday and Sunday September 7th and 8th at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

The featured guest for this year are Bryan Seaton of Action Lab Entertainment where he writes Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir comic and co-creatored Dollface, Shawn Langley and Stan Konopka of the Rejected from Source Point Press.  Other creator guests are Andrew Carter (Habitat Against Humanity, Let’s Play All The Games),  Kelci Crawford (Validation, Thoughtful Dinosaur), Christopher Lee Baird (Chronicles of the Raven Clan), Jason Lenox (Lords of the Cosmos), Jason Pell (Suicide 5, Season’s End), Paul Michaels, Larry Morgan of Electro-Magnetic Press, Brian Middleton (Wander for Colesmith Comics and Press), and Gary Morgan (Abington Press).

Joe), David Newbold (Fantastic Four, Runaways), Bomtron Art (Topps Sketch Card Artist), Jason Pell, Larry Morgan and Electro-Magnetic Press, and other artists and creators selling comics, books, prints, and other creations.

Vendors at the con will have your supply of posters, Legos and sets, chainmail jewelry and armor, comics, graphic novels, games, collectables, vintage and new toys, video games and systems, Funko Pops, plushies, cards, and more.

Activities during the weekend include photo back drop, table top gaming library, paint and take, panels on table top games, indie comics, cosplay, and more; kids costume contest on Saturday and adults on Sunday.  Food trucks will be out in the parking lot both days to choose from.

One day admission is $10, two-day admission is $20, a Pop Con tee will be $15, two-day admission with tee is $35.  Children under 10 get in free.  Cheaper if you pre-reg.

Scares for This October

Plenty of haunted houses and attractions, zombie events, ghost tours, and more around the state to enjoy this Halloween season.  Instead of doing a post for each one here is a few words about a few different ones to check out.

Scareview Ghoul School: Saint Albans, based out of the old Fairview Grade School, is a fund-raiser for local volunteer fire department.  Open mid September through the end of October.

Fright Nights WV: Daniels, award winning outdoor haunted attraction, features Appalachian Anarchy Haunted Trail, 3D Nightmare, Biohazard Lazer Tag, Spooky Gold, and Escape Rooms.  Every Friday and Saturday through October 28th.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: Weston, formerly the Weston State Hospital serving as a sanctuary for the mentally ill in the 1800’s.  Ghost Hunts, Paranormal tours, normal Heritage Tours, Haunted House, Zombie Paint Ball, and the Asylum Ball on October 21st.

Moundsville Prison/West Virginia Penitentiary: Moundsville, former Gothic style prison, Ghost Tours, Paranormal Investigations, Escape Room, Dungeon of Horrors, North Walk, Zombie Paintball, Kid’s Night October 23rd, and Family Night October 30th.

Dead Zone Haunted House: Charleston, successor to the Haunted Barn.  Attratcion with physical interaction.  Every Friday and Saturdays will have The Haunted Barn, The Asylum, and Sinister Sideshow, every Thursday night they will have The Darkness, live music, pro wrestling, and vendors.

Festival of Fright: Nitro, one night event on Saturday October 14th at Ridenour Lake from 4pm to midnight.  Will have an outdoor showing of Danny Boyd’s Chillers and Invasion of the Space Preachers.  Pumpkin carving, local artists, vendors, paranormal investigators, psychics, pumpkin races, haunted trail, zombie shoot, coffin ride, inflatables, and food.

Morgantown Zombie Walk: Morgantown, put on the by The Illusive Skull.  On Saturday October 21st, zombies gather at 7pm, walk starts at 8pm.  Will start at the Morgantown Farmers Market pavilion and go to the Morgantown Public Library.  After-walk part after that.  Raises money for charity.

Pecks Mill Haunted Trail: Chapmanville, four attractions for one price, Haunted Ride, Haunted Trail, Haunted Barn, and Haunted House and Basement. Every Friday and Saturday night from 8pm to midnight.  Has clowns.

 

 

 

 

WV Pop Con 2017

This year’s WV Pop Con is Saturday August 26th and Sunday August 27th at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

This year’s featured guests are from Action Lab Entertainment, who are celebrating five years, Chad Cicconi (NFL Rush Zone), Bill McKay (Zombie Tramp, Vampblade), Shawn Gabborin (Fracture), Bryan Seaton (Dollface), and Dan Mendoza (Zombie Tramp).  They are offering an exclusive Danger Doll Squad variant cover at the con.

Other guests are Andrew Carter (Habitat Against Humanity),  J.R. Mounts (Scairy Tales Noir), David Newbold (Runaways), Jason Lenox (King Conan), Electro-Magnetic Press, and YouTube channel Let’s Play All The Games.

There will also be plenty of other artist and exhibitors; selling their own comics, prints, portraits, cosplay items, books, tattoo artists, geeky crafts, candles, soaps, card games, jewelry, steampunk sculptures, perler art, clothing, and more creative items.

Cosplay guests and groups for the show are 501st Legion Garrison Corellia, Rebel Legion, Amtgard, Mandalorian Mercs Black Mountain Guard, Bunny Bombshell, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Vintage Theatre Company, and the WV Ghostbusters.

Vendors will have a variety of items a the con including Funkos, figures, comics, graphic novels, table-top gaming, video games and consoles, t-shirts, collectables, plush items, leather goods, toys, cards, posters, weapons, and more.

Events for the con include Cartoon Theme Song Sing-A-Long Bingo, an anime theater, kids costume contest on Saturday and an adult one on Sunday, food vendors, Outer Rim Praxeum Lightsaber School demos, Paint Me Pokémon, and panels.  Let’s Play All The Games are running retro video game tournaments on Saturday.  Tournaments are Tecmo Super bowl, Tekken 3, and WWE Day of Reckoning 2, all are $5 to enter.  Cartridges Galore are running tournaments of Smash Brothers Melee and Goldeneye on Sunday with a $10 entry fee.  Pop-up tournaments are possible throughout the weekend plus open gaming areas for all.  For tabletop gaming there will be Pathfinder Society of WV, games of Munchkin, and Magic: The Gathering tournaments.

Tickets are $10 per day or $18 for two days if you order online.

Another fun con with lots of different people to see, even if I am not sure what they are all there for.

Featured creator guests at the show are Dominike “Domo” Stanton (Starbrand and Nightmask, character illustrator for Archer), Chad Cicconi (sketch card artist), Steve Geiger (former managing art director of Marvel), Justin Jordan (Shadowman, Call of Duty Zombies), Bill McKay (Zombie Tramp, Vampblade), Rafter Roberts (Archer and Armstrong, Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream), DJ Coffman (Hero by Night, The God Child), and Shawn Gabborin (found member and editor in chief of Action Lab Entertainment).

There will be plenty of other exhibitors there: illustrators, writers, comic creators, nerdy crafters, an all girl robotics team, game creators, painters, Electro-Magnetic Press and other small publishers, sculptors, photographers, cosplayers, podcasters, tattoo artists, Ghostbusters, filmmakers, Rebel Legion, College Football Hall of Famer Major Harris, Amtgard, pro wrestler Ricky Morton, 501st, Morgantown Roller Vixens, Black Mountain Guard, Pathfinder Society, and more.

Not to mention vendors selling comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, gaming supplies, t-shirts, collectables, toys, plush, books, video games, crafts, buttons, leather work, weapons, posters, and plenty more.

They will have a kid’s cosplay contest on Saturday and an adult one on Sunday, various panels, games of Pathfinder, Magic: The Gathering tournament, other gaming demos, gaming library, and retro video games.

Admission at the door will be $20 for both days.  They will also have exclusive covers for sell for Generation Zero and two different Prince-S STARthief done by guests for sell at the show.

A comic show with a lot of variety for fans of all kinds of genres.

International Games Day @ Your Library

International Games Day @ Your Library is an initiative to reconnect communities through libraries around games brought together with the American Library Association and other library systems from around the world.  Over a thousand libraries around the world will take part in this program.  This year’s IGD is on Saturday November 21st.

Companies donating kits to libraries this year are Konami with the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game demo, USAopoly with Reverse Charades, YummyYummyYummy with Nommons: Math Universe and Calcuquest, Steve Jackson Games with Trophy Buck and Munchkin Treasure Hunt, Looney Labs with Choose One and EcoFluxx, and Paizo with the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.  Now your library may not have gotten any of these kits.  Feel free to bring your favorite games to share with all.  Dryden Press is offering a free introductory copy of their Big Damn Dryden RPG to all who take part in IGD.

There will also be the International Minecraft Hunger Games set up by the Ann Arbor District Library.  Your library might be one of the districts for this tournament against other libraries.  BallyHoo Games is giving promo codes to their new iPad/iPhone game Zombie Heat to 25 libraries.

Check your local library to see if they are taking part in this event, or if they might be doing their game day early.  Libraries that I found on the IGD map include Kanawha county libraries, New Martinsville, Morgantown, Martinsburg, Craft Memorial Library in Bluefield, Vienna, Fayette County, Summersville, and Clarksburg.

Child’s Play Weekend at Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming

The Four Horsemen Comics and Gaming store in Morgantown is running a weekend of games to raise money for West Virginia University Children’s Hospital through the charity Child’s Play this Friday October 23rd to Sunday October 25th.  All entry fees for the games will be donated to Child’s Play.  Prize support is provided by the Four Horsemen and other local businesses.

On Friday they will have a charity toy drive with Friday Night Magic.  Donate a new toy for free entry to any of their three events that night.  Regular entry is a $5 minimum donation.  Games are at 2pm, 6pm, and 6:30pm.

Saturday will have demos all day of Ashes and Summoner Wars along with tournaments of X-Wing at noon, Heroclix Superman/Wonder Woman pre-release at noon, Magic: The Gathering Battle for Zendikar at 1pm, and Saturday Scuffles with have a Smash Bros tournament at 3pm.  They will also have a Magic Commander all night event with door prizes starting at 9pm.

Sunday’s gaming is a Magic: The Gathering tournament at 1pm, Yu-Gi-Oh win a box at 1:30pm, and Dice Masters at 2pm where you can donate a quarter every time you want re-roll a die.

Most tournaments will run from $5 to $15 minimum entry fee.  If you are free for some gaming this weekend or just want to help out with a donation head on over.

WV Pop Con returns to Mylan Park in Morgantown this Saturday August 22nd from 10am to 7pm and Sunday August 23rd from 11m to 5pm.
